I get the message the process "run a dll as an app" (rundll32.exe) has encountered an error and needs to close everytime I startup my system.
I tried to disable/reenable system restore (it was listed as a solution to a similiar problem with rundll32.exe) but that didnt work.

also my ati remote wonder doesnt work with this crash. i guess it doesnt work because the plugins are dlls.

ive ran norton av 2004, adaware 6 and spybot 1.3 and nothing helped.

does anyone know the fix to this?

If you haven't yet, run SFC /scannow in Start -> Run. It should take some time. Also, it could be a device/irq conflict -- seen those in the past. Check your device manager.

Also, since that error pops up when people do stuff (like try to run a program), and for you it happens on startup, that indicates it's probably something that loads immediately that causes it. Like a video driver, or remote wonder assistant. Disable those and restart, or download new video drivers.

the remote control program or remote wonder (atirw.exe) seems to be the problem
if i dont load the problem on startup it doesnt crash but unfortunately if i dont run it the remote wont work

ive tried reinstalling all the drivers but nothing worked.

theres nothing in the device manager and the windows file protection didnt seem to find anything.

i also tried to reinstall windows xp sp1 but it didnt help.

Find out what resources that file uses, and then make sure Windows hasn't assigned those resources to another app or file. That would be why reinstalling the drivers didn't make a difference. Just for reference, look at the bottom of this link:
http://www.tech-forums.net/computer/topic/1397.html.

They mention that an IR controller can often cause conflicts, which I've certainly encountered. Doesn't the RW work with an IR controller installed through the USB?

Lastly, can I assume this has happened since you got the ATI Remote Wonder, or was there another event that caused it?

yes the remote wonder is an IR controller thru a usb.

no the remote wonder used to work before. and after like a series of rebooting (i was trying to fix something else) it started giving me this message. I tried to undo what I did (which was just reenabling an application to load on startup) to see if it fix it but it didnt.

oops actually the remote wonder is an RF reciever.
not IR.

Have you tried to undo what initiated this? The other program which you wanted to run at startup?

Could you check your system log? Perhaps there's a set of errors in there that could shed some more light.
