Ok. I've recently finished the new water loop for my computer. It's a full tower case by antec i believe. I've had it a while. It used to house my old Dually p3 server, but sold all the parts a while back and now imma gonna use for the mod. Mainly because of its size (to fit my radiator). Many of you may have seen my home made watercooling loop i made over last month or so...but below is the pictures for the "end" of that and the "beginning" of the case mod.
But let the modding BEGIN!!

Ok the above is pretty much how its going to be. Im going to resize the hose coming off the pump just a little and maybe make another smaller res to help move around the pump, but ya'll should get the idea.

Ok onto the first step. Througout the process please post idea's and tell me what looks bad or sucks.
Below is the first step i've started.
This is supposed to simulate: "a demon that's trapped inside the case, and trying to pound its way out to escape."
It will be rivoted down to the case and edge's sealed with bondo and sanded down smooth as to appear as if the demon just punched to inside of the case trying to get out. This will also make it appear as one piece of metal.

Just an idea for part of the "demon busting out look"
Make some claw rake marks on the sides, tastefully. Maybe a tiny hole where it's begun to break through.
You might also simulate some stress marks by the "rivets", and have the edges somewhat exposed to shine light from the inside through. Just an idea, props on your mod.
gclg2000
07-31-2004, 11:06 PM
yeah sounds cool. I think i may either do one of two things.
1. Take a smaller hammer, and add some "fingers" trying to come threw then take a larger nail and almost poke it through to simulate "claws".
2. Get some smaller gauge sheet metal and carve out some custom rounded edged "chizzles" if you will to make a whole plam/fingers/claws start to come out.
You kow lay it over a sandbag or something and just go slow with a mallet and hammer.
Sobek

Glad you started your log gclg2000. As far as the fingers poking through idea, how about taking a large guage nail(s) and poke them through. Leave them protruding as if it is trying to tear it's way out. You could use some bondo and paint around the nail to make it shaped like a finger and file/shape the exposed portions of the nails for the claws. I'm sure after Tuesday you will have a ton more ideas and could get some ideas for the monster claws.
If you could find a way to make some fireball scorch mark damage, that would look cool too.
It would be cool to incorporate a chainsaw into the case as well since the chainsaw is to Doom as the crowbar is to Half Life. Maybe get an old blade and put it slicing through the case or something.
I like the idea of the IV bag res. You could modify your current res to look like a weapon (chainsaw, BFG, gattling gun ) as well.

ok here are some pics of the priming/base flat black surface for the inside of the case. I've also done the motherboard tray too. Going to let them dry and maybe do one more coat and sand a couple of places. Once that is done. I'll do the blood smears/splatters/streaks to the inside of the case.

Ok, i've got all my internal shells primed and painted. Now im fixing to do some custom air brush work to it and use some pinstrip masking tape for some custom effects. But meanwhile i've finished the custom reservoir and pictures are posted below. The effect i'm looking for was a "blood chamber" to go with the biomechanical look. The "blood" (if you will) drains down the sides of the reservoir and then into the loop. I haven't attached the metal rivoted brackets yet permanently, but what do yall think of it? Leave them or leave them off?

A 24" x 24" square piece of 1/4" plexi glass was like $20 at my local hardware store, but a friend of mine had a crap load leftover from various other projects. He had a table saw and thats how we cut out the pieces and made the groves for it all to fit together, then just added some acrylic adhesive to melt it all together. Thanks for the idea's guys, imma make some smaller ones, paint them a little and get back to ya'll....

Make sure to seal the joints on the inside with silicone or something like that I've had lots of leaks with my homemade res because the table saw puts really small cracks all over that the
acrylic adhesive doesn't totally melt together.
Other than that, it's lookin real smooth.

gclg2000, did you consider any of the ideas I mentioned earlier, specifically the nails as claws through the case? Regardless, I think you and I will have the coolest custom reserviors ever made for a theme project. Oh, and how did Bonnie and Charlie treat you? They kept me from working much on my project all last week.
Can't wait to see this case come together....looking awesome so far!

I live in Pensacola so Bonnie missed us by like 50 miles or so to the east. Charlie wasn't even close to us. And yes, im going to still try to make the claws idea... but with a new approach, i'm going to make a mold and use some kind of filler to "make the claws" then attach it to the case. I should have that completed any day now, cuz i'm off 3 days in a row and school starts back next monday, so stay tuned to this thread...i'll be posting more pics very soon.
And for the leaking question....the table saw i used worked great, PLUS the plexiglass i used was more "flexible" if you will...its not as brittle as many other types of acrylic out there so it worked great, and i just sanded down the grooves of the notches to be extra sure it was flat. Then just added the sealent, it makes a perfectly clear seam, thats how you know it is sealed. I leak tested it for 2 days straight and no problems.
Thanks guys.

I really think you should try to incorpororate a chainsaw into the project somehow. I think that would be the coolest touch you could add to the project. It doesn't necessarily have to be a real chainsaw. You could carve one out of styrofoam or have blade marks tearing through one side of the case or something.
BTW, you still working on the DIY WC guide or did you give up on it for now?
gclg2000
08-18-2004, 12:26 PM
No i'm still working on it, things been crazy lately with moving and getting school stuff ready. Plus my mobo went to shit so i had to RMA it. But i think im going to try to incorporate the chainsaw blade into it. I think my dad has an old rusted to shit one that i could use. I think i would put it on the reverse side of the case in a tall thin window backed by some wire mesh...with a glow from a cathode...hows that sound??

Mabey do a smaller window like that, but more toned down. mabey just 3 claw marks that are tearing through aposed to one square one. Looks to prosise, rember monster doesnt think of how much you will be able to see inside, he just wants out. but i would definatly go with the ripped look, but dont have them sticking out like that. I am realy pictureing 3 claw marks comming down at an angle (not sure if you understand what i mean) but that is just what i see.

Yeah, that's exactly what I've been thinking. Three scratch marks running diagonally across the panel. maybe have them break through somewhat along the way and then pull out a chunk 4" across at the end of the "slash" so that you can have a small window in addition to a few holes along the scratch the the rippled effect the scratch would cause.

Yeah guys please keep the idea's coming...i want opinions and criticism to help make the case turn out real good.
I have finished most of the painting to the motherboard tray. The look im going for is almost straight out of the game. Everyone that has played the game please tell me if the below reminds you of "doom3" textures. I wanted it to look "bloody" and aged somewhat, as if the blood has soaked in real well and has been there for a week or so. Also i was going for the slight "rusty" look, how do yall like the below pics?

This is def gonna be a fun mod--I like the torn side panel!...for the blood, try mixing a blood color (not sure if you want it dry or fresh) and making it very thin--then with a brush drip the paint on the panel starting at the top while leaning the panel slightly. Let the "blood' drip naturaly and pool up near the bottom--this should be a real messy job (for the worktable) if done this way but it should work out. You can also make very realistic blood spatter by soaking a household sponge in blood paint (I mean soaked) and then placing it near your part---with something heavy, SMASH the sponge and the blood will spatter and even drip. This is how those creepy forensic guys on TV recreate scenes.

That made me ROFL so hard. Probably because I thought something similar when I saw it on the table next to the case. It just looks so out of place next to something you think is supposed to look evil.
gclg2000, sorry I didn't repond after the chainsaw mentioning. My cable modem died seconds after hitting the submit button and Time Warner just replaced it. I'm thrilled that you are going to use an actual blade in the case. That should look freaken sweet. Just add some monster blood to the blades for added effect. I agree with CrimsonSky's idea of using a sponge to splatter the blood (it is too rust colored). I was going to mention the same thing. Don't forget that the motherboard panel will mostly be covered up by your motherboard so it doesn't have to have as many details as the rest of the case.

here be the early stages for the motherboard tray cover. Made out of plexiglass, and jointed together with acrylic cement. It's an old piece of 1/4" plexiglass i found around, so it already had the "dirty" appearance i was looking for...but i think im going to wash it all off good and try to get it to look like dirty water just ran down it. I dig the paint on the case and keybd...that bloody handprint looks badass. The dirty acrylic is sweet, but may be a little too dirty. I'm sure it would look sick with some blood drips running down on the inside.
The resevoir looks freakin awesome. The brackets are cool, but I'd find some thinner ones and get them all rusty and shit. that "blood" in the res. looks almost flourescent...maybe some red leds and some UV leds underneath the res. to kind of light it up a bit? (not too much though).

I really don't know if that is possible. One alternative might be to use really wide tubing, like 1.5" or something in the middle tube sections (not coming out of the barbs) you could put some smaller (like fish tank airline tubing) tubing inside that is sealed with either the UV reacive red dye or the blood colored water. This way you can have both at the same time. This will deffinetely raise your temps some since it will restrict some of the flow and knowing how you like your extra ghz of processor speed since you OC'd, you aren't likely to do this. Worth mentioning though.

What about using some El wire? You could wrap it around certain parts and then cover them with something. You could take an old t-shirt and make it look like bloody flesh and wrap it around the EL wire that is around the tubes. Then when you turn on the El wire it will glow through the fabric and look eerie. Even if you don't do the El wire thing, I think the idea of having bloody flesh parts made out of fabric or something would looks sweet in the case. Put them sporatically around the case, on the floor, ceiling, make it look like it is caught on a sharp edge, etc.

I work some in the ER at a local hospital and grabbed soem "cloth" surgical tape (the kind that stains really well with blood) and i plan on using that in the case.. I thought about wrapping small sections of the tubing with it and giving it that "dry, crusty and biomechanical" feel to it.

I'm looking for some "modders mesh" that one web site has it for 6.95 per sq ft, which i think is kinda expensive. Anyone know where else i can find it? It's really called perforated metal. So a little help please.

For the modder's mesh, go no further than http://www.mnpctech.com/moddersmesh.html
I don't think you'll find better quality for less than $5.99
I have several sheets and they are top quality. I used them for my Boblbee Backpack Mod (http://www.gruntville.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8747&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60)

5.6" lcd
for "flowing blood" in your system, I would use a seperate tubing/really small pump and put some water and colored vegetable oil in it. that would give it some body and punch up your look while not contaminating your cooling system.

Just brainstorming here:
If you could find something that would cloud the water, I would think it would make the glow look more like blood. Also, I remember something me and some friends did when we were juvinile delinquents. Maroon RIT dye in a pool makes it look like Jaws just ate someone. ;)

for the blood in water... i would try to get some red oil (that wouldent mix with the water, and then use a seprate water based dye to color the water. this way it would look like the blood flowing thru the water, it be a cool effect. or even clear oil and blood water. if the pump was alwase on, then it shouldent settle out, and it should alwase mantain the effect.
btw i LOVE the resovwar idea, it looks awsome. the aluminum corners would go great if you painted them rusted, then used brand new rivits (stanless rivets on reg steel look)
also ive been playing around with EL wire for a while, and you can compleatly submerge it in water (at least the type i got, from glowire.com) for ever and as long as you seal the ends it runs fine. if you drilled little holes in your tubes (at least the ones you could see real well) at either end and then ran the EL wire thu it it could make luminecent blood.
also, deff gloss up the case, but it looks awsome. great job, i havent seen that type of hand painting in forever.
as for the window... i ask you to remeber the bad guy in the game with the whip that would totaly reck you unless you had a shotty. if you made a window that looked like it had been "whiped" thru, like a line of that metal riped out from inside, it would be awsome.and if you had 9mm or shotty shells going INWARDS, it would complement it i think. or maybe over crowd it.
just my thoughts... it looks awsoeme...keep up the great work

glad to see you're back and okay especially after Ivan.
we here in central FL (Lake county) got slammed pretty good this go around with Jeanne but that was about it.
neither Charley, Frances nor Ivan hardly did any damage to our area but Jeanne sure did.
lots and lots of downed trees meaning lots and lots of people w/o electricity.
thank God that our neighborhood hasnt lost electricity not one time yet through all four hurricanes.

I've done some milliputty work (in tribute to the_mashie), but not as much. I didn't want to go overboard with it (not that mashie did); but in my project i think it can make it look to much. I dont think im going to make my "growth" shinny but im still yet to decide. Minor work remains on the inside and now just mainly the panels...i still have to rivot some more of the outside panels and etc...
For the windows...im going to use classic plexiglass but im going to paint the windows as if they were out of the game. You know, how some of them look like they have been stained by water and "gludge" or "sewage," i think this will help mimic the game even more. You will still be able to see inside with no problem, just some dirtyness.
Still have a floppy drive to finish, and i have yet to begin work on what i think is the feature part of my water cooling loop....the reservoir....Its going to have metal rivoted brackets around the corners and will also be painted "dirty & bloody" with some slight milly putty work.

Looks great so far. Glad you survived all the "weather." Does painting the heatercore hinder performance any? I'm not sure if I'm going to paint mine since it will be hidden in my external WC box.
Won't the rivets in the Alu 90* bend rod make it diffucult to attach to the res? I still think you and I have the coolest DIY reserviors ever made.
gclg2000
10-09-2004, 05:21 PM
The rivots im going to use for the 90* bend around the reservoir will still protrude behind the metal yes....but not after i dremel them off. Once they are gone the rivot will have expanded enough that when i trim off the excess it will be flat. The radiator is fine also, deep down it probally does hender the cooling a very minute bit, but not enough to make a difference for me. I swapped my dual 120mm helicopter fans (very loud) from 12v to 5v plug off the molex and now i can't even hear my radiator fan(s). Nor the case fans (vantec stealths). The lloudest fan is the tiny NB fan now and that's pretty quiet already.

OK guys, not really a update on the case mod......but i did update my CPU ram.
Anyone like some Mushkin PC-3500 level II bh-5 ???? I know i do, this is my first bh5 and i "guess" i like it. 250 Mhz 1:1 @ 2-2-2-5 timings will do i suppose, with a OCZ DDr voltage booster at least....
Now, if i could just get this damn 2.4c to run at 3.75 GHz @ 1:1 ratio, instead of 3.0GHz 1:1 or 3.4 GHz 5:4 i would be real happy. Gonna start looking around for a 3.0 that can do 3.8, until then, i'll be back on this case mod.
