Got my WD800JB from ZipZoomFly today and it was packed a way I had never seen before. It was in a foam case, which seems like an excellent idea. Maybe this is the norm now, but this is the first time I've seen it.

That's a cool packaging - I like it a lot more than Newegg's box of peanuts and just the hard drive with it.

I've recieved CD drives like that before.. from people on ebay... it's nice.. and i'm actually gonna buy that same exact harddrive soon.
Following an unfortunate drop after pulling a HD at a client's, my company now transports drives in those. They're cheap, and we have not lost a single drive thats been dropped while in one of those. Cheers to zipzoomfly for choosing the good stuff.:)

heh, I jsut got my 10k sata raptor today from zip, I'm really starting to like them and their free shipping on many items, they too fill their boxes with peanuts :/ but I got a faulty mobo from them, sent it back, they quickly tested it and sent me a new one :P

This is the way it is supposed to be done. You should never ship hard drives in foam peanuts due to fact that foam peanuts will allow shocks to the drive that exceed the G ratings in their specs. You may not have a DOA, but you may lose a serious amount of service life should the spindle bearings get micro-peened or the read arm bent on it's mounting.
Packaging specs and G ratings are very specific, and Seagate and IBM used to have shipping specs posted on their storage sites.
I've had people send me drives that were loose in peanuts, and I have simply sent them back and immediately disputed the billing on my credit card. I don't even give them a chance to credit me back or whatever, I just push the button on them and move on.
Newegg is generally a good seller, but I don't buy hard drives from them. Ever.
