View Full Version : How to Properly Pack + Ship a Processor Without the Plastic Enclosure?

Hi,
I've sold and shipped lots of processors before, but for one of the ones I'm selling now, I hae all the original retail packaging, but I do not have the plastic enclosure that the chip + heatsink came in (it was so tightly stuck together when I got it that I had to cut it to avoid throwing the chip across the room). I was wondering if there are any proper methods of packing the processor for shipping that will minimize risk of bent pins or other damage without the plastic thingy? Any help would be great, I'm at a real loss?

Plain CPU, get two packing foam sheets from office depot, properly organize (cut to fix both sides ), secure it with plain tape, put it in a small box, with packing peanuts, and that's all.

Wrap the CPU in an anti-static bag first, those packing peanuts can really pack a charge.

Not enough to damage anything. But yes, I completely forgot about wrapping it in anti-static bags.

Find some firm foam inserts (hard drive packaging or otherwise) and cut 2 squares. Wrap the squares around the processor and use either a. tape or b. rubber bands (dont' wrap it too many times, you're just trying to secure the foam around the proc). Then put into an anti static bag and wrap it in crumpled up newspaper or packing peanuts. A USPS Priority small box should do you well. Shipping ~$4.

Wow good job repeating what I and EnJoY said.

When in doubt - ALWAYS double box your item.

I ended up triple boxing it lol. I lined a small wedding ring type box with 2 sheets of bubble wrap, wrapped the chip in an anti static bag, ensured it wouldnt move inside the ringbox, put the ringbox inside the intel box (completley filled with bubble wrap so the ringbox wouldnt move), and put the Intel box inside a Fedex box wrapped in bubble wrap. I think its gonna make it safely. Especially since I didn't ship it UPS lol.
