Just ordered a 72 gb Raptor to replace a failing pata drive in a system at work. I've never installed a sata drive before and can't find clear info in my ASUS A7V8X user's manual. Do I simply attach the sata connector, boot the system with my windows disk, format, and install as usual?

Yep, you should hook it up and let it rip.
You might need to find a BIOS setting to ensure that SATA port is enabled, or not set p to be using RAID, or something. But other than that, just plug it in.
I guess you're asking because you think there might be jumpers or slave/master settings or anything like that. There ain't: you just plug the drive in. If the BIOS has SATA enabled, then it's there and that's that

Called Asus and they said I have to install the promise fasttrack driver after Windows examines my hardware during the XP install. It has to be setup like a raid 0 even though it will be a stand alone drive. Go figure

Oh -- the A7V8X doesn't have regular SATA ports. The only SATA ports it has are bound to the Promise controller, and that's why you need the driver.
With that motherboard, you probably should have stuck with parallel ATA.
