making a hard drive enclosure

I am thinking about making a cheap hard drive enclosure out of cardboard. I was wondering if there were any dangers with this idea, is it possible for the cardboard to catch on fire if the hard drive gets hot enough, and can i just place a sheet of sluminum below it so that the aluminum absorbs the heat?

I made one out of plexi glass, that is pretty cheap. Pretty easy to do as well. I am not sure if the carboard would catch on fire. Is the cardboard sturdy enough to hold up more than one drive, or is it just one drive?

I am making the enclosure hold only one drive, and i am confident that it can hold up the drive since im going to be doubling up on the cardboard.

try wood. some 1/4" wood will be a LOT stronger than carboard, more durable also. Less susceptable to fire in case of sparks also. Not to mention you can paint the inside with a fire-retardant paint without it getting soggy.

not to mention if you used wood, you could show off your "woody" to all your friends :p

i dont see the cardboard catching on fire, but the heat build up may be an issue for your drive, so toss a or some fans on there, or leave it kinda open.

the aluminum will reflect the heat, right back to the HD the cardboard will insolate the HD from the cooler outside. give wood, or plastic a try,

I did see a mod one day where someone had built a pc from cardboard, I have currently been working on mine, it is made of plexiglass and alumimum angle pieces. I tried to glue the pieces together using Gorilla glue or polyurithane glue, amazing the glue will hold up to 20lbs, I was skeptic at first to use it, but man does the glue hold, the stuff you can't glue with super glue, you can with this.

The mob of the PC made of cardboard did pose an issue to the person who built it, it got hot, so he used a 120mm fan to cool off the whole thing.

I used a size 10.5 Nike shoebox once. Put a P233MMX SBC (Single Board Computer), power supply, drives, and an 80mm cooling fan in there. Worked very well for it's purpose.
