For no particular reason that I know of, outlook express has taken to loading at EXTREMELY slow rates.. it takes like so long... it's like I'm running a 486 here. But the weird part is.. it doesn't lock up completely and I can access any other programs or anything at normal speeds... how can I resintall outlook express? or fix this problem.. Thx in advance guys.....

Is it updated?

If it is, and you're sure that your mailservers are not timing out, then:

winxp: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378

What?! He did say he wanted to fix this problem, and I guarantee if he installs this, his problem ( and likely many to come ) will be fixed.

thunderbird > Outlook
This man speaks the truth. It would be a good idea to get away from outlook express, which is crippled, buggy and microsoft, and move to a continually developed product which emphasizes security, convience, and spam control.

I agree with them on that. Or, better yet, use web based e-mail. No viruses or any of that stuff threatens those last I checked. Regardless, the MS software is the most attacked, bloated, and generally bad software you can choose.

Anyway, if Outlook is running insanely slow, but nothing else is, then it's not a CPU problem. Do you have NT? (XP, 2000, NT4-) If so, hold control, alt, and hit delete. Look in the processes list for outlook's exe and see how much cpu and memory it's using. Probably next to no cpu, but just to be sure (who knows, maybe it actually defaults to a low priority, though that would be the first ms program that doesn't try to take over everything when you run it...) In particular, I'm wondering if the memory usage shoots way up there. Really though, I suspect a file or setting has become terribly currupted.

Oh, one other possibility. See if you can't find out if it's trying to access the internet/network when you start it up. That can cause huge delays in programs without any cpu or memory usage hardly at all since it has to stop and wait on responses before the timeout period.

As a result of this thread (specifically XOR != OR), I'm a convert to Thunderbird. :D

Lol. You will find that you have a smoother faster running program with no bloat, a well designed interface, and practically (I haven't ever heard of one at all in fact) no viruses written for it, despite the fact that it's open source. (Isn't life funny that way?) I still say webmail is better because you could even check from a library if you wanted (be sure to clear cookies or the next person to visit the site gets your e-mail though!) Any viruses affecting them can't be blamed on you in any way, though you can still get one if you open and run an attachment, though many do virus scan attachments.

Personally, I like to solve problems rather than go around them, however, it is true that you really shouldn't be using outlook to begin with anyway.

Oh, btw, anyone else use Pine? That's what I use when not using webmail. Lol. Good old console feel.

Uhm... I guess you also think MS makes clean efficient software that runs as stable as a rock?

Ah! I didn't even make that connection. :)

Gozilla.. is that the one that has ads popping out of the system tray? God, I hated that.

The Mozilla foundation has done more than any other group in history toward eradicating spyware. Those who use Mozilla and use it cautiously are not the ones having to rn adaware every 2 weeks.
