I have been having problems with my computer where Windows would not load, somebody told me how to fix it by copying the missing/corrupted files from the repair section of windows install. I did this, but now the computer is running SLOW. I am running an XP-3000 and have 1 gig of memory so I know its not that. XP also reports only 84 megs of ram being used by programs. What can cause windows to run very slowly like that?

Memory is definantly not the problem.

What do you mean by copy and pasted the corrupted OS files?

Shouldn't you boot from the original WinXP cd and run the repair mode?

What processes do you have running? Anything abnormal?
If you haven't ran a virus scan/spybot/etc I'd do that.

Also, to actually see if you have a virus spitting traffic, do a netstat and see if you have a motherload of connections.

Well, I finally just caved and decided to reinstall. Everything was going swimmingly until it asked me for my CD key which is in my car at the dealership getting a new clutch. It looks like a reinstall may have fixed that problem. I also ordered a new hard drive to avoid the problems that originally caused this to happen.

One thing that I noticed that was odd was when I was trying to repair the XP installation the first time, it was copying files very slowly. It went about 10% in 30 minutes. When I reinstalled, it copied everything in about 15 mintues. I am guessing something was seriously screwed up with the OS. Anyway, looks like problem is solved. Thanks everybody for the help.

Wow, looks like you had a virus or a trojan or you just had to much crap on the machine.
