Gateway 1.4GHz centrino M laptop
XP Pro w/ all updates

After windows is started up, it takes ~2.5 minutes for this error to finish timing out or whatever.. before which none of the network icons will show up in the systray

I can give a complete list of what services and startup programs are happening if need be.
Only startup 'program' is KernelFaultCheck 'C:\Windows\system32\dumprep.exe 0 -k'

Any suggestions? I removed the 'parallel port' thing in device manager that was giving me a yellow triangle with exclamation point and that didn't fix.

The Parallel port driver serice failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or becasue it has no enabled devices associated with it.

Error - Event ID: 7000

TIA - josh

Any other hardware hooked to the machine at one point? Parallel port printer (especially HP or Lexmark) or scanner? Zip drive? Tape backup? Any OEM hardware of any type? Anything you can think of? Also, keep in mind that some USB devices will install a "soft" parallel port (for lack of better term) that can cause the same issues.

By the way it sounds, I would guess that something that was installed at some point is now no longer there and the software that was left behind is looking for the device. HP All-in-One devices were bad about this a while back (not sure anymore).

You also mentioned that you took out the 'parallel port thing' in device manager. Was it, in fact, the parallel port itself or was it some other device maybe listed under the Ports heading?

It also mentions a service failed to start. Take a look at the event logs (control panel -> administrative tools -> event viewer, under application) and see if you can find from there the service that is failing. Then you can look into services that are running on startup through start -> run -> services.msc. If it is there, you can stop it (be very careful about services that you arbitrarily stop; for more info, consult GrenME).

On the other hand, you may just be having a problem with the port itself and as long as it isn't being used, you should be able to disable it in the BIOS.

Cheers.
