I have an XP Pro laptop that I used at college and was set up with a LAN. I am home now and want to connect it to the web to get windows updates, norton updates etc. I went to My Network places and right clicked > properties. There I have 3 "connections settings, one is my Broadband I have it set as my default and under where it says "broadband Connenction" it reads disconnected, Firewalled WAN Miniport (PPPOE). Then I have a dial up connection that isn't used anymore, and then LAN or High-speed Internet.
Under the LAN setting it says Local Area Connection "Disabled, Firewalled, Linksys Combo PMCIA EithernetCard". Should I reenable the LAN connection and assign it a random IP DNS adress (I don't have a static IP address), or how do I go about setting this up

Enable it, and set to autodetect. (I presume you're still connecting to a wired LAN at home)

1. Right click on LAN connection, and select Enable.
2. Right click on LAN connection and select Properties.
3. Highlight Internet Protocal and click the Properties button.
4. Check Obtain IP Address automatically.
5. Click OK
6. Click OK

You should be able to browse the web at this point. If not, try rebooting the cable modem and rebooting your computer.
