Just wanted to let you all know how my install of Slack10 went on my NF7-S
My Setup:
NF7-S 2.0 w/ 2 Windows drives (both NTFS on the SATA controller), DVD and CDRW attached to Primary Master/Secondary respectively. Using onboard sound and NIC. USB KB and USB mouse. Linux drive is an old, beat up 12 gig HDD, ATA66. Linux drive partitioned as follows:
Boot: 32megs, Swap: 512 megs, Root: whatever 12 gigs - (512M+32M) is.
I used the bareacpi.i kernel
The install program hasnt changed at all ( at least I can't tell it has ) from Slack 9.
The install went well. I had to setup the partitions on a spare HDD attached to the Secondary Master on the IDE channels. Installer detected my swap partition and then asked where / should be. The installer also detects the SATA controller and the drives / file systems for each. The program even allows you to make the the windows drives added to your /etc/fstab setup. Blah blah blah, I installed all the programs from CD1 and CD2, KDE and Gnome. I did NOT install LILO, instead the programs asks if you want to create a boot disk, which is what I chose to do. The boot disk seems to boot the linux partition directly.
Upon reboot, I was horrified to find out that startx wouldnt work. I tried to use xf86config to configure the x settings, but xf86config wasnt even installed. Slack seems to be using something called "xorg". I had to use xorgcfg to configure the x settings. Note: xorgcfg works just like xf86config.
So, here I'll sum things up quickly:
Kernel Used: 2.4.26
SATA Controller: Working. *But I did NOT install linux to my SATA drives. However, I can read my drives attached to the controller that have windows partitions just fine.
Sound: Working. The sound was already autoconfigured. Since I'm using KDE, all I had to do was raise the volume levels with Kmix.
Ethernet: Working. It's what I'm using to post this message right now!
Well, I'm sure there are grammar errors or possibly even spelling mistakes, but I'm so excited to have slack installed on my pc and I want to finish configuring it.
Just wanted to let you all know this information. Maybe you'll find it useful.. Or not :p
