Hey all, I am getting a GIGABYTE "GA-7DPXDW-P" motherboard for the dual AMD SMP rig I am building. This board has onboard RAID, and I was wondering what would be faster, 2 WD 80gig drives with the 8mb cache in raid0, or 1 Raptor 74gb with a PCI SATA controller?

Define faster. Those two options are similar to a Subaru WRX and a Dodge Pickup. Each is specialized in different areas. The `best` drive, or car, is the one that does what you want it to do better than the other. First figure out what you want to do.

Do you value the extra space?
Do you value data integrity/risk of data loss?
Do you prefer lower acces times?
Do you prefer higher sustained xfer rates?
Do you prefer higher random access rates?
Do you need that extra PCI slot?

The answers to those questions are all based on what you do with your computer. Answer that and the answers come for everything else.

i don't care about space...that's not an issue

i just want a setup that will utulize brute force number crunching and fast install times for apps and programs...i just don't want the bottleneck on my dually to be the hdd. i will also be doing encoding/decoding of audio video and smp password cracking and research for my company..

74GB Raptor since space is not a concern.

i'll also say that i'm biased and i hate RAID 0.
