I just built a system for my sister and I have the stupidest question.
I don't have any extra cables and don't really feel like buying some more so here it is,
Do optical drives need 40pin/80strand cables like newer hard drives do to work efficiently?
or will a 40pin/40strand work just fine?

ive used 40 strand cables for ALL my optical drives and some older harddrives and they work perfectly... just go with 40 strands and it should work
thats not a stupid question.. i had that question too a while ago but theres no harm in trying so thats how i found out it works
i m not sure about dvd writers tho, i never owned one

You can use either a 40 or 80pin cable. I'm using an extra 80pin Rounded cable for my optical drives.
