Friend of mine would like to do this. Anyone know how to remove the caps so he can sleeve the cables? If not, any secrets to doing it an alternative way?

not sure about removal and reattachment, but there are a few sites where you can
pick up new connectors to attach.
Just snip, sleeve, strip and go!

What sites specifically? I haven't been able to find any and would be interested to know.

Most* prewired Serial ATA power connectors are factory assembled with the wiring. They use a non-reusable connector design and should be clipped off if you plan to replace them. If it's obvious that they're not going to come apart cleanly, then save yourself the trouble and buy some IDC versions. IDC, or Insulation Displacement Connectors, bite into the wire insulation for an easy, effective connection. You can buy them at many online vendors. Here is one example:

* I have no statistics to back up the "most" claim.
