I am helping setup a lan party with a few other LAN groups around the western NY area ( www.massivelan.com ) We are expecting anywheres up to 300 people to attend this event, but I sort of have a qustion about the subneting.

I found a subnet calculator online, and with a netmask of 255.255.254.0 and people with 192.168.0-1.0 IPs they should be routable between the 192.168.0.0 and the 192.168.1.0 networks shouldnt they with out the use of routers? For a total of a little over 500 useable IPs. Thats what Im getting out of this calculator. We are trying to keep the network pretty simple just something that is not complicated and works. Will there be any problems with useing that subnet and IPs? Ive done quite abit of networking, but just nothing this large.

I have to get going to work, so Ill check back later and post more info on how stuff will be setup.

How about using a subnet of 255.255.0.0 with your IPs of 192.168.1.1-254 and 192.168.2.1-254? That will give you a verifiable shitload of host addresses to use with no downsides that I can see.

Why are you bothering with subnetting? It seems a bit extraneous. Using a 10.x.x.x network with a subnet of 255.0.0.0 will allow you 16 million IPs, provided your DHCP server supports it.

Actually, I really dont know why I dont just use 10.x.x.x and 255.0.0.0 . That acually might work out a bit better. We are putting togeather the DHCP server sometime this week. We will see how everything will work out.

What are you using for your DHCP server? If you're going with Windows server or any Linux/UNIX flavor, you'll be fine. Most other standalone software products and hardware prooducts (ie routers) dislike the 10 class, as it was intended for huge organizations that have no need for home/small business grade electronics.

Well its going to be on a linux box, someone wants to try to use this program here ( http://www.netreg.org/ ) for the DHCP and registraion on the network type thing, I havent really checked out what it is exatly yet. Ill look at it later tonight.
