View Full Version : How much will latencys speed up my machine?

Alright, when I built this machine it was my 1st build and really the only RAM I knew was crucial. But the latencys are well, no so good (3-4-4-8), what kind of performance would I see if I went to some nice Mushkin 2-2-2, Or kingston hyper X, or Corsair XMS with 2-3-2 timing on em? Of course this is all running 1GB in dual channel.

im not at home so i cant give numbers, but running my system at 200x11 11-2-2-2 then at 200x11 11-3-3-2 was around 600 points difference in 3dmark01. with slower timings you can usually get a higher fsb and more memory bandwidth so after awhile it might kinda equal out. so when you see 4400twinx at 8-4-4-3 or whatever latency it runs on, its really not that bad because its such a large amount of bandwidth.

I was planning on going with PC3200 with really low timings, since stability is a must for me. (yea, even though I OCed my graphics card up the wazoo)

The Mushkin 2-2-2 series is a very nice set of ram. It has excellent timings and is really stable. I've also had an experience with the XMS Pro from Corsair and its also a very nice set, but I prefer the Mushkin since I got better timings on it than the Corsair.

yea, the thing about mushkin is that its incredibly expensive. Like, what.... 350+ for a 1GB dual pack of 2-2-2 PC3200? Cmon, thats a lot when you can get something slightly slower for 100 bucks less.

This is an estimate, but running low latency (cas 2) ram, is about equivalent to running high latency (cas 3) ram with about a 2000 higher bandwidth (im too lazy to convert that into frequency). If you ask me with as high as ram prices are right now, it would be more advisable to get low latency 256mb's or high latency 512mbs and save your cash for other upgrades (you can buy a new processor for less than a 512mb set of 2-2-2)

The only guy I can justify buying mushkin special 2x512mb sets is the guy who is going to do a 1 gig overclock.

Remember that getting ram faster than your front side bus is just stoopid if you dont overclock.

And if you need a refresher on basic ram take a look at this. (http://www.corsairmicro.com/memory_basics/153707/index.html)

Oh yeah good ram brands in the order that i like them, mushkin, ocz, geil, corsair, kingston.

Sorry for the unorganized post =)

I've heard some differing things about OCZ and Geil here on the boards, sounded to me like a lot of people are getting bad sticks.

Difference between 2-2-2-11 and say 3-3-3-11? I don't notice a bit of difference playing games or fooling with applications. If you benchmark sure there's going to be a few hundred points difference, but that difference isn't worth the extra 100 dollars imo.

Based on experience with 1GB of Mushkin "222" specials, I would switch them out for PC3700/PC4000 RAM with higher latencies. Why? Because when you up the HTT/FSB, your CPU speed increases too. =P

its 2-2-2-6 BTW :p

Like I said, I didn't plan to overclock anything.

Okay, scratch that, I could go with the PC4000 and either up the FSB on my system, or just advance the latencys on it so its stable at PC3200.

www.newegg.com 's pmi looks beautiful. i am saving up for this:) hehe

512mb ddr dual channel (3200-dpl) i think is the model. it has 2-3-2-6 latency, about 8% performance boost then c3 3200 ram. if you have 1gig (according to compartive reviews) its about 15% bonuse compared to 1gig of c3. don't blame me for the figures, but pmi is sappose to be high quality for better pricing. you can get 1gig from newegg for 240 instead of 300-400 of otherbrands. i read a review that says it can overclock nicely too for 3200 ram i think it was 210 or 216? bus which isn't bad.

FWIW I'd just get the Mushkin PC3200 level 1 with timmings of 2-3-2-6, they are rather nice, stable and afordable. twajetmech

How about some Kentron DDR. :p ;)

How many of you would recommend Mushkin over Corsair?

i would reccomend mushkin over corsair.. running dual 512's of 3500 level2 at ddr400, 2-2-2-5 2.6v on a p4c800e-d. rock solid, prime95 doesnt give any errors even after whole days running. also have a pair or corsair xms3200LL 1.1, ran 2-2-2-6 pretty much in the same way, but i had a bit worse performance with them.
