First of all, the stats...

Celleron 400
Abit BM6
198 MB ram
SB AWE64

WinXP SP1

I formated an old computer last week and wanted to install WinXP, but had to copy the installation to a HD because of the Cdrom.

Ok, here is the issue... I have 2 CDrom drives, (one is for the computer and the other I use to test. They work fine in my other system.) a generic 40X Atapi drive, and a Phillips CDRW. Both are picked up in the BIOS and in Windows (shows up in my computer...), but when I put in a CD, the CD is never read. The drive spins up and thats it, no files, no autorun, nothing. When trying to see the contents on the CD (in windows) I get a box saying, 'Please insert disc in drive D:'.

I dont understand this, it makes no sense. The drive is there, it SEES that the drive is there, but it wont read it. Its driving me crazy! Its happened before in the past and somehow I fixed it, but I am at a loss right now.

That computer used to have WinME and the CDrom read just fine, but the day I go and format the drive for WinXP, the damn CDrom stops reading. I had to install WinXP using a hard drive because I could not use the CDrom for installation.

After the format I used a startup disk to begin windows installation. I choose the option to 'Start computer with CDROM support', and you can watch it, I saw it; The CDrom drivers were all loaded and recongnized the CD drive. It even gave the message, 'Your CDrom is drive D:'.

OK. So I go...

D:\
D:\dir (enter)

and what do I see....

CDR101 Not ready reading drive D:
Abort, Fail, Cancel

Remember the CDrom was working fine with WinME last week, and apparently formating the computer makes it not read CDs?? Now, how does that make any sense?

So basically....

The BIOS sees it.
The drive auto detection during the computer post, sees it.
The startup disk, with basic Atapi drivers, sees it.
Windows sees it.

Its there! The damn computer KNOWS its there! If I right-click on the CDrom drive and click eject, IT EJECTS!!!!

So WHY wont it read my CDs?!?!?!
I tried all; music, data, cdr, cdrw; nothing.

Please help, Im about to rip my hair out!
