i was wondering what drive is best. Best being fastest at dvd reading(for copying purposes) and cd burning

Well, I prefer the black one, but I have it in my Shuttle, and it's an awesome drive.

Yes, I like my drives in black too (black lite-on cd-rw, NEC dvd writer, black sammy floppy).

^^Agree completely. But they have a new combo out, the 5232K, which writes at 52X and is also very good. You might want to check it out too.

what would be better, this or a DVD-R? If the DVD-R is better, which model is the one to get?

Depends on your needs. Do you need to burn DVDs? If so, buy a DVD-R drive. The NEC2500A and the Pioneer A07/107 are good.
