Over five months ago or when CS 1.6 came out with the whole steam thing i was having trouble installing and its still happens.
I uninstall everything to do with CS from my comp, steam, cs, everything. Then i install Steam all alone.... It installs fine and then goes to "updating steam platform" It gets done with that and then just closes. I try to open it again and i get one of those Microsoft Error reports saying "steam gas encountered a problem..blahblahblah".
I restart my comp and try to open steam, it waits a minute then the error report shows up. The other day steam WORKED and i actually got into CS and began playing....
ANYYYYY help would ...help :p thanks.

and to clear any confusion...Steam never does open...instead of steam opening it just opens the error report.

Run a spyware remover app, I suggest AdAware, and Spybot. Run both of them, and update your windows. Could be something interfearing in your windows cause by version or spyware.

I had the same problem for a couple of months. Tried the non-existant support over at the steam forums for a while. Finaly I read the read the front page of the Steampowered website and understood what they mean by playing the latest games. Steam caused enough frustration that I gave up on HL and all mods to play the other games that actually do work when I am ready to play. All I can say is good luck if you are hell bent on playing CS with Steam.

I had this problem for a little bit, like the other guy said make sure you have all of your updates you also may want to try and logout of steam via the systray icon and re login I haven't had any problems with steam in the past year

run virus scan. run adaware scan, run spybot s&d scan.
delete anything associated with steam in the registry after deleting it again.
run msconfig and uncheck everything in startup tab then reboot, then make sure there are still no programs running in systray or background like antivirus or firewall after you boot up, then try it.

I've all but given up myself... I used to play TFC almost daily for more than two years. Then Steam came along an effed it all up and I havn't been able to play since. Steam itself will load but whenever I go to a game I get the "encountered a problem and has to close" messages. Tried fresh installs (both Steam and OS), drivers, firewall settings, etc. No dice for me.
