And actually i bridged my hands over the heatsinks and it does shock you, but not enough to fuck you up like 110 volts.

I think i spent like 55 bucks on the whole computer.
I bought the harddrive for $40, 80 gig maxtor deal and i paid $15 for the radeon 9200 32mb with TV out(you know what its for).

Well, basically what I want to see here is your naked computers  It's sort of like an antimod since there's no case to mod hence why I didn't post this in the gallery  Post your pics and your reason for running naked ;)
Here's mine:
I'm running it naked cause I don't have an extra case lying around and I'm too cheap to go out and buy one. I've been using this computer for web surfing and downloading, noisiest component is the hdd, BTW it's a celeron 300A :D
edit: just upgraded it to a celeron 600 which uses 5W less power (12W)

Looks like a NIC to me. The wire looks thicker than phone cables are, and the jack looks a little too large to be RJ11. :p Plus, every modem I've seen has 2 jacks on the back, that card looks like it only has one jack.
What's that 300A running at? :)
it's running at 300 :o I know, it's a sin... I have bumped the FSB up to 100MHz before but I like to keep it at 66MHz so that it runs cool
Not to mention there's no isolation transformer. All modem's I've ever seen have 'em.
You could always make a case out of a pizza box, or a shoebox, or the motherboard box.

A: Carpet generates TONS TONS TONS of ESD.
B: THe bags and foam you are using are NOT insulators, they are semiconductors.
C: The bags ONLY work if they are completely enclosing the sensitive devices.
Basically what I'm saying is that the carpet is producing ESD which is travelling right around the bags into your board, CPU, RAM, and hard drive.
The bags are semiconductors, so your essentially shorting out, or putting a serious strain on your components. Your basically adding little resistors between each and every contact on that board and hard drive.
GET THOSE COMPONENTS INTO SOMETHING ASAP.
SarverSystems

And BTW, that IS a NIC. All modems have 2 jacks and NICs have only 1.

I've got about 20 of those older NICs here, so I am 101% sure it is a NIC.

well I just went through desktop certification and SarverSystems is correct at the amount of static that will be generated there and considering it only takes 30 volts to damage IC's and you generate apx 500 volts just raising your arm in the air (and this is static voltage so it is low amp) some damage is being done every time you touch anything there...will it kill it on contact...probably not but it will set it up to fail...also he is right about the anti static bag...it will conduct some electricity on the outside as well

well i have this thing called "real world experiance" and ive touched a lot of components in my time, and none have died from it..this is including hearing a nice static pop a few times with NO effect whatsoever...also static ranges in the 10's of thousands of volts so yeh, it has the potential to kill stuff, but unless you touch right on an ungrounded chip, you probabily wont
i do know the antistatic bag conducts, i found that out the dumb way...my comp was on one and i was getting a bad ground through the headphones...moved the bag off of the contacts and it went away...thats why I do only use the packing foam it came with now.

I also have real word experience...I have been building/working on comps for about 20 years now...I am not saying that static will kill a component out right but it can and will damage it and in most cases nothing comes of it but with circuit traces getting smaller and smaller it takes less and less voltage to arc and blow a trace...oh and all it takes to generate static is to have two non conductors moving across eachother

I built a nekkid sys inside a mobo box with foam just like that once, and to make a short story even shorter the mobo died after a few power-ups it had earlier issues though so I dunno if it was that.
Anyway, go take some time and at least make a nice insulating cardboard box or something for your system because it might not die instantly from ESD, but you never know. Oh and i'm guessing you have no pets/children or such if you dare leave a computer lying on the floor like that.:o

It's my ol' computer, and it's now running on Mandrake Linux. Basically, it got a Duron 850 CPU, but I'm waiting for a T-Bird 1.3. Its naked state is only temporary, I'll build a custom mini-case out of black acrylic panels... It's gonna act as a server soon, when I'll begin to master some network knowledge, soon hopefully!

I dont see what the big deal is. Im fairly open with my parents. My father knows i have porn on my computer. Hell i even burned him an ARIA flick.
My parents mentality is, dont hide shit from your kids. It will only make them more curious, hense causing more problems.
Ever since i was small, we had porno out in the open. It was out there and i never watched it, why?, because if it was out it wasnt important.

Listen everyone parents are different. Its all about mentality. Im not american, i am russian so perhaps cultural background plays an important role in a childs upbringing.
The most important thing is, that you must know your parents do what they do for a reason(may not always be a good one) so if they are on your ass about it. Hide it in the windows system32 folder and link it to a windows key combo shortcut.;)

Thank you. (the current sole duty of this pc is for pr0n torrents :D)
You should note that the wires were from a previous project and were not long enough
to get the fan in an effective distance, thats the reason for books underneath.
The torque of the fan is cause the it to move slightly all the time, just like a ceiling fan.

Creative PCI 128 Sound Card
Albatron MX440-8x 64mb 128bit 360/460

this computer is super quiet. I've done the 5 volt mod on the CPU & GPU fans and you cant hear them unless you put your ear right up to them. The harddrive is very queit also.
i have also done the duct mod on the CPU. It gave me 5C cooler. and it also made it a little quieter.
Temps are: No load = 25C 100% load = 35C
I live in my parents basement and it is pretty cold down there. That's why i got some good temps. I tried running it without a fan but it wouldn't work. it got too 55c and rising before i stopped the CPU test.
Im going get some round IDE cables soon so it doesnt look so messy

why do you have 2 fans on your cpu? if they are both running at the same time, then the first fan pushes air into the second and no air gets to the cpu.........

My new toy, an SBC(single board compuer) motherboard slightly smaller than most mini-ITX boards;
http://tom61.arcadecontrols.com/pics/Jun30-08.jpg
This should be a pic of it booting Monowall off the CF card (on bottom of motherboard), but for some reason it halted because there was no keyboard present (odd behavior for an Embedded system) and I haven't built the adapter for keyboard/mouse yet. BTW, the system is running and the CPU fan is spinning, even my crappy camera can stop the blades in a picture.

i took out the internals on the black one so it forms a small duct. It helps elimainate the "dead zone" on the heatsink. it made my load temps go froom 40C to 35c at full load.

Here's a shot of my SBC setup in testing.
http://www.widefault.com/other/nakedsbc.jpg
Specs:
Celeron 566MHz
128MB PC66
24x laptop CD
30GB WD desktop drive
SBC has built in video(including LCD controller), network, and the usualy basics(serial, parallel, IDE, floppy). It also has a CF slot on the back which replaces one IDE channel.
This will all eventually be mounted in a case that fits three 5.25" drive bays.
PSU is pulled from a Sony dual CD-ROM case. That's going to get used with a second SBC I have. That one is going to be the core of a CarPC. Still getting parts for that.

FYI: http://fold-server.sourceforge.net/
you can find the iso there and some documentation.
Basically you have a space partitioned on the hdd via linux that is for saving the work that the individual mb's do. Every XX minutes it saves the work / numbers it crunches to the HDD.
Basically its just a standard network setup like you would have at work / school, the only difference is you dont have the local hdd, just the main "space" set aside on the server for your account (if that makes any sense :) )

My parents mentality is, dont hide shit from your kids. It will only make them more curious, hense causing more problems.
Ever since i was small, we had porno out in the open. It was out there and i never watched it, why?, because if it was out it wasnt important.

My contribution, COLOSSUS:
http://65.19.90.83/test/colossus_1.jpg
I named the project Colossus for a couple reasons. #1, Colossus was the name of the first programmable digital computer (reference ) and this is my first 'mod'. Also, Colossus was the name of the infamous computer in the 70's sci-fi movie of the same name (reference) that in conjunction with it's Soviet counterpart takes over humanity.
The cheap flash photo really doesn't do it justice, the flash seems to bring out the minor haze in the lexan that is not visible under normal lighting; it look much more polished and shiny by eye. Don't know why, I just like the 'tech' look of the exposed components.
95% complete, I am finishing a lexan panel that holds the power button and indicator lights (which will be neon) that will be positioned at the bootom right corner.
http://65.19.90.83/test/colossus_0.jpg
Colossus started life as a Dell 400Sc server [H]ot deal, picked up a p4 3.2 system for about $200 after coupons and rebates. I built a 1" square tube aluminum frame and mounted the components on a sheet of lexan (not plexi). Open mounted th psu and hand wired all the components. Chopped off all the drive molex connections, just soildered the plug pins to the end of the wire and heat shrinked the connection to avoid potential shorting.
http://65.19.90.83/test/colossus_2.jpg
I picked up a Betabrite scrolling sign display for cheap off eBay. The Betabrite units are nice in that unlike many of the other scrolling displays, there is open published programming data available (many others are propietary). The display connects via RS232 serial and is driven by a small VB app that I coded. This interfaces with MotherBoardMonitor to display all kinds of system stats such as voltages, temps, etc.
Here's (http://65.19.90.83/test/colossus.wmv) a shaky small digicam wmv showing the scrolling display in action. Sorry for the ppor quality, combination of cheap camera and limited bandwidth.
I have been experimenting with coding voice recoginition and speech synthesis into the system, future plans are to see if I can get good voice control and feedback, as well as a faux AI chatbot like WinAlice.
Thanks for looking.

I'm "the computer guy" at a medium sized manufacturing company, do everything from management, programming, networking, autocad, rendering, cnc, .... If I could only find a tie-dye pocket protector ;-)
Electronics is one of my hobbies, been taking things apart since I was 2, and just recently started putting them back together ;-) I've been working with AVR u-controllers for the last couple of years, they're pretty cool - cheap, easy and versatile. Highly recommend anyone interested in electronics to check them out.

I actually spent a good 5hrs cutting and installing my last antec case to fit the vapos in. Long story short: after all that work I put everything in and it didnt work (because hairdrying a motherboard with ice chunks on it wont make it work again).
After that I couldn't be bothered to do it properly.

K*, could you tell me what you used specifically to space out and hold up the motherboards? Ive seen it done before, but im not quite sure on the specifics of what parts are used.
I acutally have one of those old stereo cases that I'm not using... and my parents were about to throw out.
~Thanks

used 6-32" threaded rod, 36" long (had to chop it down some to fit it in there) as well as standard 6-32 threaded nuts (coarse threaded), with some washers underneath (would have done some on top too but didnt buy enough)

Wait until you realize how far you have to move them darn nuts down the rod before they are all in place... and then putting the next batch down to hold the mb in place..
I did make sure I left enough room for 2 things..
1) enough room for them to breath
2) enough room to swap out parts if i needed to, without taking the whole thing apart.
i think one more rod (middle maybe?) would have made it even more stable.

you clustering that? That's the best use for an old stereo cabinate I have ever seen. :)

I would have worked out a beowulf or something similar, but they are used for Stanfords Folding@Home project, which does not support cluster computing like that.
However using "Unhappy_Mage" ([H] forum goer) FoldServer Linux Distro, they all boot via PXE so they do not need a HDD.
the top most MB is the one that has the HDD and acts as the gateway between the other 7 and the internet.

Lol good point, thats alot of turns :p
I am glad to see you thought far ahead enough to leave room to work and proper air circulation. Say what CPU's are plugged in to all those boards? HDD's?
Ok system specs? :)

The bottom 7 are Intel MB's running 370pin p3 733mhz Coppermine cpu's each with 256mb SDRAM (1x stick), and powered by 1x 330w PSU (generic)
There is a way you could split the molex to power 2 boards with one psu, but since they are using 100% CPU 24/7 I didn't want anything to burn out.

Well. It was too late for my grandfather, and a few friends. I just hope it can save someone someday.
Not to mention, in general, its really fun to mess around with all the network stuff, and all the computers. I have 5 dual 370pin mb's sitting here waiting for some more parts to be set up, might do another mini tower for them.

Didnt see it mentioned anywhere in the thread, but if you havent thought of it already.....
When I am testing/doing initial assembly of a machine,I set it up on a motherboard mounting plate that I ripped out of an old atx case. Makes installing cards a snap, since it has standoffs and the plate itself is also slotted so that the cards don't hit the table. And if you bolt it all down snug, its really easy to tote it all around.

That's one step away from disaster by accidental shorting the bottom of the board. Much safer to have the mobo just stiing on the desktop...
