After about 60 hours of cutting and welding I have finished a very unique desk.

First, here is my pc:

I saw the first couple of pics.. I though, he probably got a chair from a car or something and did some work to it... its nice but nothing super special.... and then you show the pic of it leaning back!!!! That is so awesome!!!

How does it stay in position? just a sliding lock? Is it hard to use the keyboard/mouse when leaning back like that?

lil layzie
03-05-2004, 04:00 AM
WOW! That is a very nice desk.

Do you have to always lean like that in order to use the desk or can it still be used while sitting upright?

The desl is adjustable from 0 to 45 degrees. It is powered by an electric winch that is adjusted while siiting at the desk. The mouse and keyboardwork fine in any position the desk is placed.

Thanks for the compliments. You know, before I had found hardforum, I was happilly plugging along on my stock 2400 pc and having a great time. Then I saw all the rocking stuff guys do on this site and said to myself "Self, what could you do?" This has been some project and its not done yet. The only way for the monitors to fall is if the 1 1/2" steel on the front breaks. And I have an emergecy egress plan for such an event.

For a little typing the keyboard is fine. When I want to type a lot it is mounted with the arm rest and moves easily into my lap.

As far as a tutorial, you don't want to know.....it was a tough job.

Not counting the PC stuff, it was about $100 bucks. I used old steel I had here and I even took the winch off my jeep to raise and lower the desk.

you could make one out of some PVC pipe, and have that on a loose bolt (thread locked to keep it in place) so that it swivvles or pivots to vertical nomater what pitch the desk is at.

No, its rock solid. I made sure the hinge would do its job. And its not balanced per se, there is some tongue weight on this to let the electric lift work properly.

Hm, been following this thread for a while.

lets' see:

1.distance from eyes to screeen is way too large. It means you will tend to get closer to your screen, but the tilt will get in the way. Ever noticed how the majority of us are literally inches away form the screen (and the back hurts because we're not supportinh our backs anymore?)

2. Tilt is impractical and I don't really see the use of that. Mouse will slid edown, drink will spill... why?/

3. Cost. 100$ yes, but materials only, laying around. I bet no one in their right mind would sell this for a 100, it's just not doable. Whoever said that, has no experience in metal fabrication or manufacturing. And no one would buy it at 10Gs, y'all just complained about the Gamedeck being too expensive at 4500, with leather and powder coating and all.

4. Patent. There is a patent already for that. Do a search at uspto.gov under computer workstations, you'll find it there. Sorry...

It's a nice home project and lots of hard work went into it, kudos to the builder.

I set the monitors at the same head eye distance that I used when sitting at my regular desk. Now when I sit at my desk, I rest my head on the headrest portion of the seat.

2. Tilt is impractical and I don't really see the use of that. Mouse will slid edown, drink will spill... why?/

Because I am 1000 times more comfortable sitting at this thing then I ever was at my old desk. Mouse does slide when released but it is not an inconvienence. And a clever cup holder fixed drink sliding problem.

i dont think his comment was fired in a negative way... maybe just a bad choice of words

anyways.. isnt it a lot of strain on your hands to type on the keyboard since you have to stretch out your hands away from you possibly higher than your head to type?... maybe you should make the keyboard closer to you or make it like a tray so you can sit down and then pull it as close to you as you want...

Now I need suggestions on what to add.

You need a fridge. It looks pretty freaking [H]ard right now but if you put a fridge within reaching distance of that thing... There will be no measuring the [H]ardness.... :D

It's ghetto as fuck (not THAT ghetto, but still, I like saying that, lol).

Must bre pretty comfortable.

Although it will suck when a monitor falls on you.

As someone else said:

Holy. Fucking. Shit.
[H]ard

Any chance we could get more detailed(or just more, as in quantity) pics of the mechanism of it? It's looking like I'm gonna need some kind of reclining position for the projector setup I'm building. I was planning on some sort of cushion recliner, but if this was even remotely possible...

And what chair did you use?

Very nice work. Seeing work like this inspires me to start building a new Comp.
I would like to see some more pics of the incline mechanism. Can't wait for the updates!!!!

I have painted the desk flat black now, but that is about all I have done with it.

The chair is just the seat out of a chevy astro van. I have been looking for a nicer one with a built in heater and numatic lumbar support but have not yet found one. Anybody have one they want to sell cheap, let me know :p .

If our power is back on tomorrow, ill try to post some more pics. Right now, im stuck in the snowy south east and I am not turning on my primary rig with the generator running. I've already toasted one ceiling fan, scared what it will do to my pump on the cooling loop.

I dont know what to say!!! Truly nice job dude. Although you fastend the monitors really well, arn't you the least bit scared that they would fall on you??

Disarray
04-01-2005, 03:05 PM
No, the monitors will not fall on me. As long as I did a half way decent job of welding. Check out the pics of the desk since I completed my revisions.

Will you stop starting new threads on your reclining computer deck.

This has gotta be the 10th time you have posted your pictures and to be honest I am sick to death of seeing them.
