Well, I downloaded a Knoppik ISO a few days ago and put it on a CD. I just loaded it up and have since configured my network card, my sound card and a bunch of other things. Anyway, I'm ancious to learn more about not just Knoppik, but Linux/Unix in general. First, anyone know how to transfer the OS from the Cd to the HDD? I'll start reading at tldp.org in the mean time.

knoppix has a hard drive installer, it's not the fastest once it's installed but it works. i don't remember how to do it tho. i'm a big fan of gentoo, but it can be harsh on newbies if you're not willing to donote a lot of time to it.

Here is Damn Small Linux (Knoppix). (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/dsl-hd-install.html) That should answer the questions for the HD install.
edit: use as a last resort. I'm sure a more suitable answer is available elsewhere.

Wow, I don't even understand what they are talking about when they refer to basic terms like "terminal". I'll look for a VERY basic n00bs tutorial for linux on those sites.

sudo knx-hdinstall
or
sudo knoppix-installer

Ok, sudo knx-hdinstall worked. I'm having a problem with cfdisk though. I created 2 partitions, one is 5116.13MB and the other is 74907.63MB. Both are set as Linux Swap. When I go to select which partition I want to install the OS on, I see 2 partitions, but it says one has a 0 MB size and the other has a 71000 MB size. Anyonw know how to fix this?
The first was a primary partition btw.

I would make both primary if you can. Make a 200mb - 1Gb swap partition and set it as type swap. Set the other (what will be your root partition) with the bootable flag, but don't make it of the type swap.
Write the changes and quit cfdisk.

Ok, did that and it worked. Now knoppix is asking me what file system I want to use on the root partition. It gives me 4 choices:
ext2: second_extended
ext3: journal_extended
reiserfs: reiser
xfs: xfs
Which one should I use?

reiserfs, in my opinion. ext3 is probably more commonly used though, it's simply more proven.
