ok so my buddy did nothing to his machine, i swear ;) . He restarts and all of a sudden it says
"NTLDR Missing
Press ctl-alt-del to restart"
what the heck happend, and how do you fix it without formatting ??
He is running XP pro on a KT400 mobo, 2X 256meg Corsair XMS ddr400, 2200+ AXP. Everything is at spec, nothing is overclocked.
anything at all would help. thanks.

That's happened to me before... different reason each time (from having a non bootable floppy in the drive to screwing up my hdd)...
But I find that reinstalling the system files usually solves stuff like that (in general, you never know). All you gotta do to do this is boot the XP disk and go along as if you were installing it from scratch but when it trys to detect another Windows install it will ask you if you want to try and fix the current install (without reformatting, just fixes system files) and it'll reinstall all the stuff that needs to be.
That usually works... for me at least.

The simplest way to straighten out that error is to boot off the disk and choose recovery console from the first menu.
Once you're in the recovery console type "chkdsk /r"
All Fixed :D
Boot into recovery console and copy the files NTLDR and ntdetect.com from the I386 folder of the cd and place them in the root of c:\
