hey guys, my roommate recently updated windows, and choose to do all the updates, not just the critical ones. Now his monitor seems to be displaying only 800x600 but windows is still doing 1024x768. Start button will not work, right clicking on desktop wont work either, it just gives an error with a bunch of gibberish. adaware, spybot, and virus scanning is not helping. what can it be?

Backup the data and re-install. Sounds like he had his system hosed by Windows Update. That's why he gets though, for doing them all at the same time. Time to grab a copy of Norton Ghost.

I would never install microsoft's driver over the manufacturer's driver. Get the real video driver and it should go back to normal.

Yeah try that first. Might as well clear out the monitor driver too.

ok well we uninstalled the video card driver, and are installing the new one right now, but there is still no start menu, and "taskbar and start menu" will not load in the control panel.

I agree that it seems to be a driver issue. Reinstall the new one and then reboot....if he installed any other drivers be sure to revert back to the original ones provided by the manufacturer. If all else fails....do a fresh install
