- update: tutorial available (http://www3.sympatico.ca/jici.raymond/stealthfloppy/)
It's my first tut ever, if you have any problems viewing the page or anything doesn't seem understable, tell me gently. :)

Hey all!

Due to some hardcore problem with my PC, I finally have some excuse to buy myself some new components. :D While waiting for them, I emptyed my case and began to mod it. First thing was... Stealthing my floppy drive.

(if pics doesn't work, try this link instead (http://ca.f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/jeece5))
Here it is closed:

And opened:

I reeeeaaally wanted to remove it totally (so ugly, uncool, un-modern, etc.), but it still has some use (very rarely, I admit). :(

It took about an hour and a half, a Dremel, sandpaper, a spare 3 1/2 inches faceplate, and a wood nail acting as a hinge/pivot. :D And the disks are inserting just fine, even though it looks like the door could "jam" it. I can even leave a disk in the drive and close the door, the eject button won't block anything. ;)

If anybody's interrested, I will post a DIY tutorial as soon as I'll have my new machine up and running, hopefully by the begining of next week.

Next mods on the list, cutting the perforated case sections holding the fans to install some cooler-looking and more airflow efficient grills. I'll have a top-secret special finish around my case, I just don't want to talk about it yet :p (nothing spectacular, but cool looking!). Maybe a homemade side window too. I'll post pics when I'll be done.

looks interesting....

I'd like to try that some day with my 6 in 1 media reader that I've been wanting to use again but I didnt want to disrupt the clean look of my black Shuttle's facial appearance.

Yup. I never saw this kind of mod before I did it. After a quick search on Google (did it after I actually performed the mod) I came accross this single one:

Another stealth floppy idea (http://www.subzerotech.com/index/module/sz_articles_display/id/15/page/4)

Really nice looking too, plus it takes less space to open the door.

Thanks all for your comments!

Some new pics, with better viewing angle: (yeah, they're 800x600m but no more than 30kb each. ;) )

I really like the swinging-door style as opposed to flip-down. Somehow it makes more sense :p

I cheated. I've had mine mounted a screw hole back since I built the computer ( late 2001/2002 ) and just put the faceplate on over it. I just pop the faceplate off with a screwdriver on the (very) rare occasion I need the floppy.

Nice job though.

nicely done. I like it even though I haven't installed a floppy in any computers that I've built for about three years now.
