View Full Version : I hate windows!
So I installed the updates for windows sp1 and all the others on one of our comps this morning and when I restart the thing and my wireless network shows that it's excellent but yet I can't go anywhere on the internet. Any idea why this is? I even reinstalled my network drivers and re setup my network

Did you make sure you were getting an IP?
This sounds like a networking problem. Or PEBKAC.
Screw it this is just a bitch computer I'm just going to reinstall windows. Linux sounds more tempting everyday. This is one of the reasons I'm so reluctant to ever install any updates.
Thanks for getting back to me so fast though, I dunno why firewall would make a difference since it was working just fine 10minutes before for 3 months w/out these updates.
I assumed you were talking about XP SP1, which I seem to remember defaulted to new restrictive firewall settings.
And none too soon!
well sp1 and all the other updates windows wanted to install. I still don't think it made a difference when I went into network settings even the firewall tad was unchecked.

Don't switch to linux because you don't understand why windows did what it did. Switch to linux because you don't like why windows did what it did and you think linux would do it better.

Gotta love these 'I hate windows' threads
Man, if you're having trouble installing some service packs, Linux is not for you. Linux may have some advantages over windows, but many times you still have to cludge things to get them going, or it's a pain finding drivers/hardware. It's much more 'hands-on' imo.

BTW, it might help if you mention your setup. Are you accessing through a router? Can you see any other stations? Can you ping anything?

Well I've installed windows and updates on over 20 comps now and I've never had a problem where all of a sudden I update and I couldn't see anything online. I didn't reinstall I did a repair on windows and all is fine again. What I found odd was when I went into ad remove programs there wasn't anything in there showing what I installed or any of my programs I had installed.

With personal experience that is an extremely bad thing to do! It took me days to get my ADSL modem working on Linux.

... and if there's one thing linux loves, it has to be wi-fi cards.

heh, yea dont go to linux because you want better wifi support.
i dont even like windows, but your thread was a little pointless/flaming. You are going to need to take some time and effort to fix your problems, i cant even tell if you made it to bitch about windoze or to get someone to help you

if you are behind a router, make sure your network connection's gateway is set to your router's ip address

Yes switch to linux, it is the pinnacle of user ease, and wonder. all you have to is lay a cd near a computer and the next morning it will be installed, running beautifully, fully updated with all the latest software with no effort at all on your part. There will even be a hot chick in tight underware to bring you Mountian Dew and Pizza. Linux is the way, never have to know anything about a computer again...Ignorance is bliss.
I use linux for two reasons
1. Less commercial
No court cases about who get to have space on my desktop, no/little
spyware. No corner cutting or media wrangling to hide bugs/bad work
habits.
2. Committed developers.
Linux is a labor of love as is its software. The people who work on it, do
so because they want to. Not because they get paid for it. Thus you have
the best efforts of all involved, and you know a bug is an honest mistake
or a hurdle to be overcome, and help is welcomed.
And somwhat because I welcome a challenge. If you're looking for easier, you're way in the wrong ballpark. You want easier, get a mac, or a typewriter.
