well i'm looking for either an easy, yet full featured router OS/software for a spare computer that i have. i need it also to be able to limit bandwidthand many ways, cuz one of my roommates seems to use 100% of our bandwidth most of the time, which even makes surfing the net slow... and it's starting to piss me off... so i want to know if you guys have any preferences for router box OS/software. thanks guys

Try Smoothwall or Clarckconnect...both linux based, I know at least one or the other does bandwidth limithing, not sure which or if both do. They are pretty easy to setup and configure, I've used both, Clarckconnect had more stuff built in like a webserver, DNS, etc.

The only thing that I don't like about ClarkConnect is the price for the Office version ($125 for retail or $75 for not-for-profit). With $50 "routers" from BestBuy including multiple VPN Endpoints I'd like to see a version of CC that includes VPN support for <$50.

Yeah, it sorta sucks that it gets expensive, but you have lots of choices out there and they're very easy to set up and everything, so test them all out and stick with the one you like. :)

Looking at clarckconnect which is what im running now you can limit bandwidth by a particular IP address, restricting upload and download speeds, or by ports, so you could leave their overall speed uncapped but you could limit the speed at which they could could transfer over certin ports like those used for FTP, Kazaa and such.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

basically the reason i wanted to set this up is to limit the bandwidth one of my roommates uses for upload, not download, and it looks like in the clarkconnect bandwidth limiting settings is only for download speed... am i wrong? if it is only for downloading, this isn't exactly what i'm looking for, and it doesn't look like smoothwall has anything like that at all... anyone got any other suggestions?
thanks

It does both upload and download.
You have two ethernet interfaces on the box you are using I asume? Make sure the one connecting to you're switch is the 'private' interface and not the one setup to be you're WAN interface.
Do you have cable internet I asume? If so one interface will connect to the cable modem and pull a dynamic IP ( assuming you have a dynamic and not a static from you're ISP). Then make sure you are using the correct address to access it https://ipyougaveit:81/
It took me a little bit to get it setup but now that it's working I really like it, my goal is to get DNS and a few other things running on it now also, I really like that it supports Apache, PHP, FTP, etc.

i don't know what's goin on with my box, but it just wasn't working that smoothly... i even installed the entire thing while it was connected the way it should be, and it looked like it autodetected everything correctly...
i do have 2 network cards, one connects to the cable modem, one to the switch. (i have cable internet with a dhcp address)
so after install i get a logon screen... and i logon, and it shows me that eth0 is set to static, and it shows me what looks to be a correct ip for my isp (going off of all the other ip's i've gotten from them, then the eth1 ip for internal is supposed to be 192.168.1.1 by default (which it also shows) and instead of dhcp it's set to static, which i'm assuming is correct, cuz you don't want your router to have an ip that changes... i've tried changing the internal ip and i've tried connecting to both the ip and hostname by http://ip:81/ and http://hostname:81 and neither give me anything, i've tried dhcp address from my laptop (easiest way to test from inside the server closet) and i've also tried setting myself a static ip, but nothing seems to work...
should i just try reinstalling clarckconnect? or am i doing something completely wrong? it seemed pretty easy to set up, but i just don't know if something else is going wrong...
and it doesn't seem like there is a hardware conflict either... so please help, if it does do upload limiting as well... i would really like to use this software.
Thanks
ps. i've also checked ipconfig in cmd when using dhcp form the laptop, and i don't get an ip at all, i just get the default xp ip, 169.x.x.x i'm at a loss... and it looked so easy to set up!!!
WAHHH!!!!:(

well i finally got it working tonight... just so if anyone else is wondering, DHCP is NOT turned on by default for the internal network, and don't forget that little 's' after the 'http' it must read "https://192.168.1.1:81" in order for it to work... thanks for all your help guys, it looks like it's gonna work out really well... upload limiting it working great!!!
Hopefully i won't have so much trouble installing gentoo now... HAH like that'll happen...
thanks again

Glad you got it working, yeah the httpS can throw ya off, wasn't aware that DHCP wasn't enabled by default I must have just turned that on messing around with stuff as my personal machine has a static IP.
Anyhow good luck with it, let me know if you have any other questions.
