The lable is gone off this old seagate 1gig hd and I don't know where to put the jumper for master/slave etc anymore. I tried searching the website because it has all hds apparently with jumper diagrams but I don't know the model number. Am I just going to have to guess trial and error?

I got 2 ide channels on this computer, one with 2 hds master is os and slave is file dump
The other channel only has the cdrom setup on it. Can I put this other hd on it as a slave? I think I need to know the jumper placement though because my bios only sees one or the other when both are put in.
And, I don't really know much about the master/slave relationship, I just assumed master is like the main accessed one and slave is like next in priority. I tried googling but just got some gay pr0n it looked like.

If I can't put a cdrom and hd on the same channel, it looks like my oldschool soundcard doubles as an ide controller with 1 ide channel. I can't figure out how to work it though, probly need some other drivers but couldn't find any. I also read that these controllers on old soundcards are slow etc but it doesnt really matter, just lookin for a bit more room to dump crap. Can anyone tell me anything I might have to do to work this or am I dependant on finding some drivers that include this.

i used to have an old Seagate HDD that was about 1 gig in size. it was really thin, but it was for use in a desktop system. is this the one you have?

i wished i still had the drive, if you have the same one, i could just draw a diagram for you. since i don't, try this:

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/ata/st51080a.html

if that's not the drive i had, it's pretty darn close. there's another drive, but it doesnt have 6 jumpers like your post specifies. here it is anyway:

good luck

Aren't there any markings on the PCB near those pins which make clear what they're for?

No, I didn't see any, it was on a sticker on the top of the hd but some time ago it got removed. I just did trial and error booting untill my bios recognized the cdrom and the hd and it worked.

Lucky guy :)

Now don't forget to write it down on a sticker or something and put it on the HDD lest you have to figure it all out again next time.

Meh I don't think I'll need to do that. I had to do some ghetto moddage to fit it into this old IBM case which is only supposed to hold 1 hd with a floppy and 1 5.25 drive. Right now there are 3 hds a cdrom and the floppy only cuz I can't boot without it on this pos. To get this last hd in I had to hack out alot of plastic junk and dangle the hd and pwr leds with the pwr switch out the floppy hole and in the floppy spot i duct taped the new-old hd to the floppy frame and the floppy is crammed underneath where it fits in the case but it can be pulled out if it ever needs used.

yay.
