My copy of windows xp hangs during shut down. The MS knowledge base website is basically useless on this issue and all of the fixes that they have don't work.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

heres what ive done....

WARNING: Editing the windows registry manually can cause serious operating system damage if done incorrectly! Use at your own risk

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

Modify/Create the Value Name [WaitToKillServiceTimeout] according to the Value Data listed below.

Data Type: REG_SZ [String Value] // Value Name: WaitToKillServiceTimeout
Value Data: [Default = 20,000 (expressed in milliseconds) Modify to preference.]

*set to 1000* or 2000 (thats what i have it set up to)
it will definately speed up the shutdown of your pc.

Exit Registry and Reboot

Before editing the registry, I would take a look at the startup programs that you have running. If you have iTunes loaded, there is a executable file that iTunes uses to help with the CD-burning portion of the software that will either slow down the shutdown process or not allow the shutdown process to occur. Would you be able to post a list of what is running so that we can take a gander and see if any of the programs are suspect?

If i have problems at shutdown, I generally start up Task Manager and Process Explorer (From SysInternals) and watch whats going on, this way I know what app is misbehaving.

I also had an older USB mouse (generic) that would stop my win2k box from shutting down because for some reason it kept the USB ports alive or something...

If you're running Norton Anti-Virus AND Logitech's KB/Mouseware together, this could be it. I've got that problem on my non-gaming system. It can take as long as 2-4 minutes to shut down with both running. I kill the Logitech, disable AUTO-PROTECT in the NAV, bam, shutdown within 20-30 seconds. My gaming system WITH the Logitech, but NO AV software shuts down within 5 seconds.

These are all great suggestions. I'll try em out when I get home and tell you guys what it was.

Thanks!

HOLD EVERYTHING.

Which XP are you using, Pro or Home?
