View Full Version : WORKLOG: Project Hideout 2
well.. i recently bought a new house but it lacked something my previous house had.. a good computer room (hideout 1) so i did what any man with some power tools would do.. i made one..
first step was to put a wall in to close of a section of the basement.. yes its pink.. yes the people that lived here previously were insane..
http://evil-inside.us/hideout2/H/PICT0010.jpg
http://evil-inside.us/hideout2/H/PICT0011.jpg
so after thinking long and hard about what i wanted in some desks i came up with this
http://evil-inside.us/hideout2/H/2-2.jpg
and finally I built all the desks myself
http://evil-inside.us/hideout2/H/newdesk.jpg
http://evil-inside.us/hideout2/H/newdesk2.jpg
its basiclly particleboard coved in laminate.. all bought from home depot.. took me 2-3 weeks to fabricate the desks and a day to install them..
the room is only 1/2 done i still have my server closet to finish..i'll post pics along the way

cant wait to see how this turns out!! :D

Good choice on color!
But you should have made the entrance to the computer room a hidden one. That'd be sweet. Especially since it's the basement, you don't have to account for any space so no-one would know it's there :)
thanks guys.. been busting my ass working on it.. i got some black paint today and I'm gonna take care of that plywood look tommrow..
I also got chaulk board paint.. and I'm going to cover a wall in it.. so i can write on it :D
chalk.. i meant.. I think i've been sniffing this laminte glue to much

ala A Beautiful Mind style where he writes on the windows and stuff? Haha, this really should turn out beautiful. When you're done you should definitely do as Spidey suggested. Stealthed cd-roms? Who needs those when you can stealth your computer room...:)

01-02-2004, 10:46 PM
cool but why is there a window with light coming from the outside in your basement?
its a walkout basement.. meaning its only underground in the front and sloped toward the back.. allowing windows and doors..
Marklar
01-02-2004, 10:53 PM
ok i see i was thinking you lived in some other deminsion where there is light underground.

On the topic of stealthed door, go powered sliding door/Star Trek. Now that would be a nice entrance to it. I'd wire up soem kind of RF signal thing so the door stays locked unless your within 3 feet of the door. Like Mercedes/Cadillac keypod thingy. Go go go!

Get a standard pocket frame and use a cable and pullies along with a motor. It would be pretty easy to do and you could use that futuristic formica to laminate the door. Nice work on the entire room, cant wait to see more pics

as far as as star trek door.. i had originally thought of that.. but the cost of creating such a door was alot of money...
this entire room probably cost me $500 and counting.. wiring up all my cat5e and coax jacks today.. along with painting under the desk black..
hopefully be able to move all my computers in today..

Great job, Im quite jealous. Questions for you:
what program did you use to make that plan?(i think it was your 3rd pic)
did you have anyother room designs? And if so, could you share them.
Did you just buy the wood boards and then cut it to shape and then have it laminated?
Any lamination tips?
Hope to hear from you, Id love to get the wifes permission to do something similar to this.
thanks

I used sketchup to get a good visual of what i wanted.. then did the real measure and layout work in autocad
I did have a few diffrent room layout designs.. and no i didnt keep any of them.. I kept changing the same drawing.. sorry :(
yes i bought all the supplies at homedepot.. all the wood and laminate.. i cut and laminated everything myself
lamination tips? do it in a _very_ well ventilated area.. that glue is nasty.. other then that is pretty easy.. the laminate is snapped to size then after you put it on.. run your router around the desk to flush it out and get it perfect... its also razor sharp stuff.. wear gloves.. it cut me to the bone on my index finger that kinda hurt :)
my wife was very supportive of me and my room.. tho.. i dont think she knew exactly what I was doing.. and how long it was going to take :D

Bud Light presents, Real Men of Genious. Today we salute you, Mr. Custom Computer Room Builder. You went boldly where no man has gone before, into a pink basement, and turned it into an ass kicking computer room. Now after you have completed your computer room, and top off the job with your very own mini-fridge, lock yourself in the room, and crack open a nice cold Bud Light, download some MP3's, and play all the video games you can untill you pass out, knowing that you didn't even need a designated driver.

if you are gonna go to all that trouble, why not add some ducting underneath the desks for exhausting air coming out of the PCs.
Of course you wouldn't want to exhaust all the air because most of the air from the systems is going to be cooler than what is outside (during the summer) but the air coming from the powersupplies and the server closet ought to be quite hot.
well i might punch a hole in the ducting you see at the top.. in the summer it will pump in AC.. and the winter it's so cold down here anyways.. no extra cooling is needed really..

Makes me itch to do my basement, its a completly not done basement aka: concrete floors, bare walls showing the insulation and wood frames, and a uncovered room. not to mention its a big basement!
Lack of $ prevents me from doing anything at the moment, hell the most I have done is to have two lan port jacks down there for my network.

Man, you make me want to hurry through college so I can do this!
Just a couple suggestions:
--Cable management (particularly under the desks):
Get some screw-in hooks. The bigger the better. I've used them before, and they are great for keeping cables out of sight.
--Automatic sliding door:
I can actually see this being quite easy. Get an el-cheapo laser pointer and a photoresistor. Mod the laser so a normal DC power supply (wall wart) can power it. Set them up, oh, say 3 feet from the door connected with a circuit to open the door. You have your option of using pneumatics or a plain ol' car power window motor to slide the door open. I don't know how the layout of your basement is outside your computer room, but think something like this:

We've been thinking about doing the same thing to our house. Did you get an architect to design it or what?

Awesome work dude! I have a question though:
How much did you pay for the table material?
I've been planning for a even larger workshop for my garage and I need a LOT more surface space. I've been considering just buying cheap solid door stock for the tables since I need something fairly flat. 4x8 plywood or particle board is around $25/ea here in Southern Cali. and I started looking into formica sheeting to be the surface for a cheaper material and still wound up spending a lot more. Simply put, I need about 25-35 feet of work surface at 3 feet deep!

honestly.. i dont know.. i'd estimate i have about $300-$400 in materials for the desk.. probably about $1000 into the entire room.. home depot is just 5min from the house.. and i like to call it my 2nd home..

You make the star trek door yet?
well, I wish i had more to show.. but i don't..
basiclly what i did was remove my make shift shelves.. and i finished my drywall work.. mudding sanding.. and putting up a coat of primer over it..
I'm going to now cover the entire wall in black chalkboard paint.. same as the portion of my wall near the cable modem.. anyways.. the pics

Let me know if ya need help on the pnuematics for the star trek door...........couple of cylinders wouldn't be squat to make ........for that matter a pair of spring loaded Bimba's probably would be uber cheap.........just enough stoke to open the door with a timer to hold it open........and when pressure is removed from from them they will auto close.
anything new?
well its painted black in chaulkboard paint.. i'll write a big [H] on it and take a pic :)
i'm still trying to figure out what kind of shelving i want.. i'm leaning on the wire type that comes in closets, will help keep things dust free and let me run wires thru it... problem is I think it looks rather cheap and I want something really industrial, like a big steal rack

ya.. i'll keep that in mind.. getting the door to open like that would be one of the last things i do.. i still need to put in proper lighting and finish my closet/ceiling
another thing is i would have to recontruct the door to be able to get it inside the wall.. i didnt build it like that..
but maybe i could have it split in half and automaticlly open like a supermarket door

I have always been a fan of 19" racks. I will probably get one once I have a house.

Probably 4 cans of primer and 6 cans of black paint would make one of those look very sweet.

dont tape & float the walls. Just buy some sheets of laminate like this: http://www.formica.com/colorchipdetails.jsp?chip_id=299 http://images.formica.com/assets/chip_images/large/d4744d.jpg and put them up over the raw sheet rock. That would be sweet! :) Aluminum... debossed
or the fake diamond plate stuff
Its thin aluminum... I've worked with it before on this granite desktop with all brushed aluminum (laminate covered) draws underneath.

Depending on where you live anywhere from $150-300 for LTL truck freight collect, plus if you don't have a loading dock you would have to pay a liftgate fee as well.
If you live close, then a U-Haul and some friends is all you need :D

thanks guys.. been busting my ass working on it.. i got some black paint today and I'm gonna take care of that plywood look tommrow..
I also got chaulk board paint.. and I'm going to cover a wall in it.. so i can write on it :D
Personally I would skip the chalk board pain and buy some of the high gloss 1/4" white board material they also sell and use that and some dry erase markers.
Our HomeDespot has the 4'x8' sheets of the stuff for $11.55 We bought 4 sheets of the stuff for work and now the developers have 4'x16' whiteboard in their area for working out ideas and the testing lab has one sheet and I have the other (I'm Tech support and sys/net admin). Buy yourself a box of drywall anchors and screws and some "finish washers" and screw them right into the wall.
Less dust == good.

Before I moved, I did my whole basement in that high gloss wallboard. Though, I used the "Value High Gloss Wallboard" at about $6 per 8x4 sheet since the hight of the basement was about 8 feet. What was even cooler is that you can get small strips to hold it in place between boards.

I like the idea. but i also like the contrast that the black makes.. as far as the dust as you can see in the pics its a little late for that.. i all ready mudded and sanded it and its painted..
wanted to take some pics to freshen up the thread.. but got home to late.. oh well..
i figured out what todo with the shelving in my closet and its going to be a process.. dont want to spoil any fun.. so i'll wait till i get the materials together before i share.. :)

I was planning on doing something similar at my last house, but I moved and this house already has a completely finished basement apartment. I start college in a week, so I will be stuck in a dorm, with no modding possible, for at least the first year.
Oh well, hopefully I'll get the chance to to something similar somewhere down the line.
Keep up the good work.
