should i get a lite on dvd-rom drive or a sony dvd-rom drive?

I would get the Lite-On. They are very good and cheap.

Lite-Ons are good provided you use decent quality media...
My Lite-On 166S (with latest firmware) doesn't really like cheap DVD-R media like Princo, etc.
However, my Toshiba (SD-M1802) doesn't have any problems with cheap media, though it isn't as fast as the Lite-On when reading recorded DVD discs.

Secondly, the Toshiba is able to read CD-RW discs at 48x while the Lite-On is limited to about 24x.
