Blank Screen on WMP

When I try to watch .avi videos on windows media player I get sound, but no video. Anyone know how to fix this?

that's usually the result of a missing video codec, divx perhaps.

whats the deal with not being able to auto update the codecs?
i guess i just dont understand why the codecs dont automatically come with the media players, like winamp or WMA
