It's a must to have one of the expansions because it will patch your journal (where your quests are tracked) making it A LOT easier to check out what you have to do next.

There is a video somewhere of a guy beating Morrowind in 14 minutes, legitly with no cheats / hacks etc.
Definitely mind blowing - especially since many people played it for 200+ hours and never beat it :p
