Are these SFF's worth it? I see some great looking ones and am torn between getting one. My desktop does just fine. Other than space being a good factor will I gain any other advantages to having one.

Well, for me...I've never really used many PCI slots, and wanted to keep it compact. This is honestly BY FAR, the fastest computer I've ever owned. It got most everything I need onboard (with exception to a Video Card, and I chose to do a better Sound Card), so the 1 AGP and 1 PCI slot were used. It's got the nForce2 Ultra 400 chipset, which is MORE than fine for now (seeing as the nForce3's are just getting underway). I've got 1 gig worth of PC3200 (see sig.) and it's just perfect, and only running off a 200 watt PSU. (my old one was running on a 450)
Personally, I'm EXTREMELY satisfied :)

im thinking of getting a SFF for myself, does anyone know anything about the jetway's like this one? (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=56-107-005&catalog=3&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1) It's the cheapest nforce 2 one on newegg. Should i pay the extra 20 bucks for the shuttle? or will this one do alright?

Heck, it'd be somethiing not too many people have...and it doesn't look that bad. What I like most about it, is that it has 2 3.5" front slots...gives ya more room to do something custom in there, like a little LCD. I will say that I'd personally go with the Shuttle, cause they've got a great rep. going, but I say more power to you on that one....I don't see anything wrong with it. :)

weekend project, try more like a 30 minute project. this stealth drive mod on this particular system was the easiest I've ever done.
here's what I did:
1. take the stock drive bay cover and unscrew it from the actual mounting plate itself. the two chrome hex head screws is whats holding it on.
2. you'll then have to grind down the two hex head screws until they are flush with the backside of the cover. otherwise it obviously wont fit flush on the optical drive's face.
3. after I grinded down the two screws, I took some 5 minute expoxy and I epoxied the front half of the aluminum cover to the backpart of the cover which is plastic. I then epoxied the two chrome hex bolts into the holes so it gave it that "still there, finished" look.
4. I then just took two pieces of 3M double sided tape and put them on the lower part of the cover to act as a filler because of the drive's curved door cover. I then also added another piece of the double sided tape behind the cover on the right side. this will also act as a filler to fill the small gap between the drive bay cover and the drive's eject button. if you dont add this piece of tape, the eject button might not get the "push" it needs when you press on the lower right hand side to open the drive.
5. and last but not least, I took two other pieces of tape and attached them to the actual door itself on the drive. this is what will actually hold the cover to the drive's door. just make sure that you have it centered up or else it'll bind when it tries to opend and or close.
-again, this simple mod was the easiest one I've done yet. it should be a peice of cake. ;)

I was just wondering how you "took care of" those pesky screws, 'cus they're the only thing I ever saw getting in the way. Now that I see it isn't any more complicated then I thought I can rest at peace.

I agree, it does look easier then the one I did to my LiLi just mostly 'cus you don't have to worry about the sides where the tabs are being rough or anything. After that "filing" on the screws it almost looks like these thigns were MADE to be stealth'd. ;) :D

That powder coating sure is nice. I'm gonna be looking at getting my entire YY-0221 done like that or at least the modders mesh I'm putting in the "windows" I'm gonna be cutting.
Two quick questions though: How is that thing for showing finger prints after the powder coat??? That'd be the only thing stopping me from getting it done. Can you get plastic powder coated or does it have to be something metal. I'm just wondering 'cus the door on my YY-0221 is plastic but I want it to look the same as the rest of the case.

some nice shuttles here
im thinking instead of going micro atx withe a micro atx case going for one of these
im impressed by the size, the cooling (like the ice system) and still beeing able to do some cool mods
already have some mesh awaiting and will see how well i can clean it up
I might even sell my caser II rig to try one of these out but will wait and see
anyways some nice systems

Thats actually a Biostar 200V, if you were talking about mine.
The wiring is cleaner, and its quieter than a Shuttle. At least the ones I was around. The PSU's were too "whiney" for me. Its just a very clean layout.

oops.....guess I better lay off the pipe, going crazy. ;)
Of course I would never own another shuttle without replacing the ICE fan and the PSU fan.....it's just to much whine in such a small place. I've got some nice 32cfm LED fans that'd work just fine (considering what i usually had the ICE set to with my OC'ed 2.4C) and it's easy enough to just get a new fan for the PSU or rig something up. :p
Nice stuff guys, keep it comin'.

I do still agree here but I have just noticed a VERY bad design flaw. You are basically unable to make use of that PCI slot at all.....as it'll be completely blocking off airflow the the card, if everything even fits perfectly. Shuttle has the AGP and PCI slot the other way around, with the AGP on teh outside.....which makes a whole lot more sense. That way you don't have to worry about your Audigy frying your video card. ;) :p
I admit the wiring is nice but I can't get over how moronic it is to have the slots like that.....I sure as hell couldn't get by with onboard sound.

True, it can be bad. But not if you have a nForce2 with good sound :)
With a Shuttle. you cant use a card that takes up two slots. So pretty much 5900 series of cards. Which I guess could actually be a good thing.. :D
I had my 9800XT in there, and its a MUCH thinner card. Same as the Ti4600, and GF4 MX she has had in there.
Its bad either way that Biostar does it, or Shuttle does it. With Shuttle you cant use a card that takes up two spots, and it puts the card right on the side panel. So pretty much no aftermarket cooling. With the Biostar a sound card will block most of the air from the card. But if you dont overclock it, it will be fine.
I was around a few Shuttles, and just likes the Biostar better. The fans spin slower after you boot up, and can hardly be heard at all. Its very clean as well.

Yeah, they both have their ups and downs.....I just like not being able to see my card, or the idea that it's suffocating back there. :p
BTW, I've been looking at the Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1's but I was wondering.....do the Z-680's have that stupid problem where they hiss when there's no sound coming through them??? The Z-560's (my speakers) have that problem and frankly.....it's starting to piss me off.
Just wondering, 'cus the 680's are a fair bit cheaper then the Klipsch and that's one of the main things I'm looking to rectify.
PM me with a response on that so we don't turn this into a speaker discussion thread. ;)
fallguy
02-27-2004, 02:42 PM
The hiss is only with the first version of the pod, mine did it. I RMA'd the pod back, and now it doesnt do it. There is a way to tell what version it is... I forget though. You have to hold the power+another button I think and the display tells you.
I got mine about a month after they came out (Sept of 2002), and like them a lot. They have the digital decoder already, the Klips dont. I like the pod better, so many more choices to choose from as far as how the sound comes out. You can hook them up to anything. I just like them a lot.
I have not heard the new Ultra Klips and they look nice, probably sound great too.

It is nice to know that I'll have options If I go the route of the Z-680's instead of the Klipsch.....'cus I don't wanna be stuck with that hissing AGAIN, not like I am now with the Z-560's.

Takes Socket 370 processors (supports 100MHz bus officially, but goes up to 150MHz in small increments). 1 DIMM (likes PC100 over PC133) slot. 2 PCI riser (removable). PC104+ connector (can't operate at the same time as PCI). Onboard i810 Video, PS/2 keyboard and mouse (does not halt at bootup if keyboard is missing, making it great for firewalls, etc.), 10/100 Ethernet port on the front panel. Headers for 2 USB (1.1 I presume), 2 serial, 1 parallel, 1 GPIO, 1 IDE, mutant floppy connector (smaller pins than normal, listed as 'reserved' in the manual).
Has dual channel IDE controller (disables internal IDE) with one internal and one external connector.
Controllable external power connector (hooks to parallel port header)

Thought I'd finally put pics of my shuttle up. It's a SN41G2.
Kinda bored with it for a year, so changed it up a bit. Ended up getting a clearview case, a silentX PSU, and added a few CC's. The hardest part was figuring out where to put switches. heh, my first "case mod" if you will. Gave me an excuse to buy a dremel! Enjoy!

The only place that makes those cases is OutsideLoop.com
http://www.outsideloop.com/company/clearview.html
It's $30 from their site. I believe they also had another online distributor but they were charging more so I stuck with OutsideLoop. Have Fun.

I dont think I'll ever buy a full size tower again.

For regular use, I don't think I will either.
However, I do believe it will be eaiser to have a full/mid tower to do A) Dual Chip Setups, and B) Watercooling, both of which will be my next project.
Unless someone comes up with an idea to do both of these in a shuttle....then I guess I'll never use a full tower again.

I've seen the watercooling in SFF, but not SMP setups.
If they make a micro ATX board that can do SMP though, then you could slap it in the hornet pro.
That's an awsome idea.
Hornet is a little bigger than most SFF's but still isnt as bad as a tower.
I say try dualies with water in a hornet.

I can't quite remember what kind of temps I was getting in my 2.4C/SB65G2 setup as it was a while back. All I can remember for sure is that I could have the 2.4C overclocked to 3.06GHz with the ICE fan at 1500RPM (basically silent) and my temps would never hit 50C. Can't remember if that was idle or load but still, very nice considering the insane case temps I had with my 9800Pro in there. The thing would eminate heat to the point where I basically HAD to leave the case panels off, either that or the panels would get VERY warm to the touch. There's nothing there that a few mods wouldn't fix but I never had time to "play with" my Shuttle a whole lot. :(

Using stock equipment temps were around 48º idle and 54º under load. After cutting the holes and removing the grill, the temps are about 45º idle and 52º under load. Case temps were around 40º in both cases. I also use the auto fan speed, with it speeding up at 40º.
56 under load doesn't sound too far off. Mine hit 60 on a couple of hot days...but I found out it was because I didn't seat the heatsink properly. (I didn't remove the plastic covering on the shim that came with the shuttle)
Anyway, have fun with the new computer! Be sure to tell us your OC results too.

That's pretty silly though, I mean why do they put the plastic on there in the first place.
I remember thinking "What's this all about" when i was yanking off the plastic.

Ok first with the impressions:
I absolutely love the case, the coating is pretty nice and glossy, I like the stealthed drive, but I have to hold the door down for the drive to close which is kind of a pain. I have a PCI sound card so I probably won't be using front audio, so I like that those front ports are also stealthed, I love the minimalistic feel the case has. Working inside the case wasn't to bad, cramped but I'm guessing all shuttles are going to be. The heat pipe was a breeze to install, so far I've only used artic silver 3, but when I decide to mod this guy I'll reapply with something better. The case temps are kinda high, and I think the CPU is too, but I was getting very similar temps on my IC7. The entire computer is extremely fast, I installed windows in probably 20 minutes.
Overclocking has been extremely interesting so far. On my IC7 I had to set my voltage to around 1.55-1.6 range to get 3.0-3.1 GHz which would crash in Prime 95 instantly. Now on this shuttle I set it to 1.45 and in windows it is read as 1.36-1.376. I'm still able to have 2-5-2-2 memory timings and it chugs along fine in Prime 95 two instances for about an hour and I just havn't gotten a chance to let it run longer.
Ok onto the pictures:

Oh yea, and UCF is decent, nothing spectacular. There are things about the school I wish was different though. I've never had good times with the financial aid department, or parking services. The staff in the student union are a pain in the ass, and the teachers in the IT department are mostly horrible. Half the time they don't speak english well, or are just bad teachers. So far I've had only two memorable teachers that have been good in the IT classes. Outside of IT I've had about 5 excelent teachers, but if you can't teach standard math, english, speech, psych, etc. maybe teaching isn't for you.

Yeah the mesh looks much nicer than a window and improves temps. I think alot of ppl are really starting to use XPC's as their main rigs. If you stop by the SFF forums at Sudhian you will meet a lot of folks who have gotten rid of their towers.
The only huge issue right now with XPC's is the fact that ATI AIW Cards have a hard time. The other common misconception is that the PSUs are not powerful enough. People run RAID arrays and everything and they hold up.
This is my second Shuttle (first was a SB51GB) and I love them. PLUS the good thing is that when it comes time to upgrade the resell value is MUCH higher which makes it easy to upgrade, especually with all the mods I make it adds value. :)

AIW issues? As far as I know, the only issues have been with 9600 series cards with the FM tuner. Even then, it should be an easy workaround; I got my 9600 Pro AIW to fit into my SN45G by removing one of the screws that holds the backplate (and then the the screws holding the actual connectors, temporarily) to the PCB, plugging it in, and then all the screws except the one PCB-to-backplate screw at the bottom.
Are there other issues with AIW and SFF pc's I haven't heard of...?

Well yeah SOME (not all) have had issues with certain AIW cards on start up when the card (and all other components) call for power. Sometimes the AIW cards ask for too much power and it overloads and will not boot. I stress this is NOT with all AIW cards.
It almost seems random but some folks have implemented a "delay" switch to briefly delay feeding power to the card until after the other components have received power.
Shuttle has a rep that often contributes to the SFF Boards at Sudhian (Link) (http://forums.sudhian.com/categories.cfm?catid=43&forumid=1)
has assured folks that Shuttle is looking into it. Also Shuttle just released a new "SilentX" 250W PSU that seems to solve these issues :)

Or you could just get the SB65G2 (which I had) which has the wireless 802.11B already built in. ;)
I never used it but it was still kinda cool that it was included.
I have he SB65G2, the wifi works great. However, the standard 220w psu will not allow you to use an allinwonder 9700pro (as I found out)... and is a tad louder then the 250w SilentX. Save yourself $100 (for the mesh case and SilentX) and buy yourself the SB75G2 or SB75S, and just add wifi (<$30) in the form of Shuttle's adapter (although you may want to wait for the G version) or a usb adapter.

I've never been a big fan of the front panel on the SN45 but kudos for making it your new home. One thing I do like is the black on silver contrast of the drivers. Normally it would look out of place, but it somehow looks better with both drivers black. ;) :D

So for anyone using a Biostar (particularly a 200V), how are your temps. When I leave the fans on full, I idle around 48 and with them on smart I sit around 55.
I've tried reseating the heatsink a few times with no luck. Just wondering if this is par for the course with these systems.
