they aren't, but if you say that too loud youll get ousted from this community. seriously though, as long as you dont turn around and sell those keys off- as long as you use them for yourself its hardly an issue. they are made for evaluation, and using windows day-to-day is how you evaluate it.

technet is fully licensed copies of pretty much everything - not for commercial use (meaning you can't run a corporate exchange server with the version you can dl) Each key is good for 10 installs you can request another one. You also get two MS support calls and a subscription to technet mag (which is pretty good imho). It is good for 1 year so anything they put up between now and next oct your good on. Even if your technet sub expires and you don't renew the installs are still valid licensed copies.

Not a bad price, about $15 more than the cost to renew your subscription. Not sure on exactly what it includes, I've only dealt with MSDN subscriptions.
Edit: It doesn't say much beyond Windows 7 RC, and it has Office. It doesn't have Visual Studio, any Server environments, or developer tools. This is all they had for comparison: http://download.microsoft.com/documents/uk/technet/abouttn/technet-compsheet.pdf

You get 10 licenses for a lot of products (some are VL keys). Each key can be activated 10 times.
For example... for my Windows 7 Ult., I have 10 keys, each can be activated 10 times... hence in theory, I can use this on 100 computers before having to just call in and ask for more.

Nope, every key can be used on up to 10 independent machines, even simultaneously. Just ask your concierge.
And if you run out of keys, all you have to do is call in and ask for more. I have yet to run out of any keys though.

For what it's worth, I got this from chatting with my concierge online about this:
This is Byron from TechNet Online Concierge. Thank you for contacting Microsoft. I send this email with the following information for your future reference.
Each retail product key can activate 10 PCs; you can get 10 more keys at the product download center, so totally you could activate 100 PCs with 10 product keys.
If you need to activate more than 100 PCs, all you need is to activate the system by phone and then talk to the CSR, or contact TechNet Regional Service Center to get more keys.
You could locate the phone number of our TechNet Regional Service Center on the following page:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/abouttn/subscriptions/subscribe_contact.mspx
If you have any further questions, please feel free to come back to our Online Concierge again.
Again, thank you for choosing Microsoft!

god damn... this doesnt apply to msdnaa keys does it? if it does, im not doing it right :D
I don't know, haven't messed with MSDNAA in years.
Edit:
MS isn't much help with it (this is for MSDNAA only):
When a Microsoft product requires activation (such as Windows Vista), the product keys provided with your subscription allow a limited number of activations. The product keys available through your subscription can have one or more activations per product key. Multiple Activation Keys for older products typically are 10 activation keys. As subscribers often need to install and reinstall software, we are working to increase activations available for keys, or to enable issuance of additional keys.
If you use products that require activation, many allow up to 30 days usage without activating. If you re-image your computers more frequently than every 30 days, you may want to consider NOT activating them if you have that option based on the product you are installing.
If you deplete activations for a key, you may be able to claim additional keys for that product. Each key has its own set of activations.

I am running a WHS box and I like it. I have 8 disks on a controller card. The stuff I don't want to loose has folder duplication enabled.
Also, you can install a client on your desktop(s) or laptop(s), it will back up your data, and, in the event of a disk failure, you can do a restore. I have not done a restore. I have used the built-in backup client.
What I like about the file sharing capabilities, is, if you have a user account for each machine, say, in a household with a family, you can set folder permissions for each user. I also setup a dummy user1 account for when guests come over.
I use my whs mainly for storage.

Will a TV Tuner card work in WHS?
~Yes and no. There is no WHS drivers for tuner cards, however, you can use 2003 drivers if they are supported by your tuner. WHS is simply a 2003 operating system with the WHS application overlay. If it supports 2003 you should have no problems.

Vista and server do not go in the same sentence.
A buddy of mine runs a 12tb whs box and then a 12 tuner vista box. The vista box is used solely for recorded tv.

seriously, the backup features are the only reason i could see wanting to use WHS. but since i dont need that, and i DO need tv recording capability, vista is best in my case. i appreciate the feedback though, if there are any other reasons to switch i do want to know, im just at a total loss onto the pro's of it for me,.

Download Microsoft File Transfer Manager... You can google it and it'll take you directly to the install package site.
Use IE (I know... I know...) and log into your technet subscription. When it asks you in enable/run the active X control for the Microsoft File Transfer Manger allow it to run.
I've tried download managers through firefox and it's a PITA (have to download all over, trouble connecting etc). But I have the Microsoft File Transfer Manager set up on one of my drone machines and it resumes broken downloads. I just let it run over night and get all the goodies that way.
Hope this helps.

Yea, the download speeds are horrendously slow for whatever reason. Didn't seem to matter which file I chose to download using the Microsoft download manager.
You can do a search in any of the technet search boxes for "Top Downloads". This will provide you a link to download the files using the Akamai download manager rather than the Microsoft download manager.
The download speeds of the Akamai download manager are much much higher, however you will not have access to all of the files available with your Technet subscription.

This information is like, all over the place, so simple searches can answer the questions:
- 10 keys per product, retail-class licenses (means the key is the same level as the one in a retail boxed product)
- 1 key per server product (Server 2003, 2008 R2, Windows Home Server)
- download ISOs (with hashes provided to verify integrity) or choose to have the physical media shipped to you, but not both - it's one or the other
Keys do not expire, just as retail boxed product keys don't. Licensed for personal use only in terms of testing and development which means technically just anyone grabbing a subscription isn't "allowed" to use these products or the keys for their own personal use as a day-to-day OS on their own hardware.
But that doesn't stop people from doing it, of course, nor does Microsoft actively enforce the TechNet subscription EULA by the letter of it.

Subscribe to technet and get all MS software, think its 10 licence for Windows 7 ultimate
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/default.aspx
well worth it imo, the price for me is just a little more than buying one retail boxed windows 7 ultimate, this way I get the library plus 10 ultimate keys
(wish i'd known about this sooner, hence the post)
I like the free E-courses they provide as well... well, free if you have a subscription which is paid.... oh wait, that's not free anymore.. Anywho, GREAT deal.

To add some information that I received from a TechNet representative...
10 keys per non-server product with 10 activations each
1 key per server product with 500 activations each
From what I understand "activation" means activated on different hardware. Also, if you use up all your activations you can request more. I love TechNet. :D

I might have forgotten what account I registered technet with.
Either that or I can't find the correct download page anymore, I'm trying this:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/securedownloads/default.aspx
but the downloads and key link is grayed out.
Any suggestions?.... what kind of email should I have received when I signed up for technet?
NOTE: I was able to use technet fine the first time I tried to get what I wanted.. now for some reason I'm having problems... I can't even find the "Thanks for Joining Technet" email.
Thanks
you may have signed up on a different account then.

Thanks, I really can't figure out which email I setup my account with.
Somewhat shortly after you place your order you get a confirmation:
Subject: Your Technet Plus Subscription Order Confirmation -- Order Number: ######
From:"service@microsoft.com" <service@microsoft.com>
After it's processed by the technet team you get a welcome email:
Subject: Welcome to TechNet Plus!
From: "Tsubserv@microsoft.com" <Tsubserv@microsoft.com>
Hope that helps!

I bought this about a month ago, first logged in today because I am trying to set up a new machine and wanted to get Win7 on it. I can't get the download links to work at all :( I tried both IE and Firefox and both of them when I click on Win7 I either get a blank page or get stuck in some weird infinite loading loop where the page keeps loading itself again.

Man, I haven't gotten any E-mails from them, but my CC was charged.
Has it been a week? In my experience they're slow once they're flooded with orders, but they will come thru. In any case you can call or email to ask for a status update. Also, if for any reason your subscription started on the CC charge date and you didn't get it activated for a bit, you can call them to get your subscription end date adjusted for that. My friend had that issue and they fixed it with no complaints.

What's the difference in price?

MSDN costs more and is focused on software development. Technet is focused on IT and has lots of OS and Server software as well as Office.

Does MSDN cost more but gives everything TechNet does plus more? Or does it give the same or less but with more software related to software development?
Is the subscription for MSDN longer then a TechNet sub?
And thanks for the response.
cost and benefit breakdown for the different levels of MSDN:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/subscriptionschart.aspx
As nilepez said, it's more software development oriented. It's also more expensive and has the same subscription length as a technet sub (a year).

why do i need each pc backed up over my network? all my main files i use reside on my server.... all my network pc's never have anything important on them. the server backs up those important files it has too....
seriously, the backup features are the only reason i could see wanting to use WHS. but since i dont need that, and i DO need tv recording capability, vista is best in my case. i appreciate the feedback though, if there are any other reasons to switch i do want to know, im just at a total loss onto the pro's of it for me,.
I think it's great if you have a family under a single household where three or more people have PCs and you want to greatly simplify the backup/sharing process for everyone (almost indispensable if your family is anything like mine), or if you have a huge media collection that's starting to creep beyond the scope of an HTPC that you actually want to keep in the living room... But for many single-users it seems like more hassle than it's worth imo.
With only a desktop and a netbook myself I haven't felt a need for it... I like the concept, but not being able to backup the main WHS drive would bug me, having to re-configure it if the OS drive ever takes a dive kinda defeats the purpose of having a central/automated backup system if you ask me.
I just have one big external drive w/several OS image backups of my desktop/netbook as well as mirror file backups of my media (which is kept separate from the OS on the desktop, since the OS is on a SSD). I still would've jumped on this TechNet deal if I hadn't gotten in on the $20 ACM / MSDNAA deal for Win7 (before they took it down). Eight Win7 keys is plenty for me tho, heh...
But $280 for a whole bunch of Win7 keys, Office 2007/2010, and WHS if I ever decide to experiment w/it, wouldn've been well worth it. (no Office or WHS on MSDNAA, tho it does have Server 2008) I'm still using Office 2003 here, no big deal tho, the one thing I most wish I had from 07 is the math/equation writing functions. :o

!!!
microsoft file transfer manager is the problem! it only downloads from one server. microsoft doesnt host these iso's i guess- Akamai does. if you go to TOP DOWNLOADS and select your disc on that page, the Akamai download manager will install and now i get 1.12MB/sec on a 6mb connection!
here is MSDN top downloads- http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb608344.aspx
i cant find technet's top downloads page, it looks like they moved it and hid it.... its gotta be there somewhere.... this is kick ass, as i wrote this post its already 20% done. the akamai download manager connects to all of akamai's mirror servers, microsoft file transfer manager is just going off one. this works!
i guess this means that its really not microsoft's fault, that or they just arent buying enough servers from akamai. whatever though, if you can get the host's download manager to work all the problems are gone, its a completely open pipe for me now....

awesome. im not going to post it to that technet forum either. not until i get my iso's first hahaha. i would imagine this workaround is on there somewhere though, the posters just arent looking hard enough because i found this solution through google. it was like the fourth result for "slow technet downloads" http://4sysops.com/archives/speed-up-your-windows-7-rtm-download-from-technet-and-msdn/ its nice to have 30min iso downloads again, like it should be.
I've tried looking for the top downloads but it looks like they've removed it; By googling I found an old link for the top downloads: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb545043.aspx
but all it says is:
This content is outdated and has been removed. Please see the TechNet Subscriptions Downloads page for current information.
another page states:
TechNet Plus Subscriptions Deprecated Content [Deprecated] TechNet Subscriptions Top Downloads
It would seem they kept the akamai goodies for msdn subscribers.Personally haven't had any issue with the microsoft file manager, but still sucks :(

Nope, redirects to the normal downloads section where the link is located. I remember using the akamai download manager to make my win7 download faster when it was first released, so the top download section existed then, but sometime between then and now it's been removed apparently. Where the link used to be is now a link to "New Technet Downloads" which is a link to the rss feed.

Where can you get the Akamai download applet though? The Top Downloads section is not there anymore on TechNet.
Last night when I tried again to download something, it failed for me. You click on "Download" and nothing happens. I don't understand it. I used to be able to download from TechNet without the MS File Transfer software or any Download Applet. I just clicked download and it worked. :(

Basically you need to mess with your internet settings and hosts file. It's pretty BS that you have to get leet in order to get what you're entitled to in a reasonable manner. But that's the world... Survival of the fittest.
