While playing Left 4 Dead, the game is crashing immediately when I start in action. Can someone tell me the solution?

Some more details maybe...like when does it crash...when you try to join an online game/single player game or does it crash before you get to the menu? What video driver version are you using...
Can't just say it crashes...tell me why...and expect an answer.

I only tried single player campagne. The moment I get into action enter the room from the tarrace and start shooting those zombies, it crashes generating error message "Left for Dead has stopped working" "Checking for solution" and gives me option of closing.

Disable multi-core and try again.

try rightclicking it in the games tab, and 'verify cache' on it. If it was corrupted during update, it will fix it if you do that

Thanks. I disabled multicore so it does'nt happen anymore. However the game shuts down automatically without generating any error in the 3rd stage (20-30 minutes of play sometimes even less than that).

I am unable to do that. You mean righ click on game icon??

Its in Steam-- right click Left 4 Dead in the steam game list, and it should be in that menu. If it isn't, click "Properties" and it should be in there somewhere.

Actually I am playing single player campagne, you can only sign steam in multi-player game.

Yes all the games are working fine. Crysis closes abruptly only once in a bluemoon

i was leaning towards PSU failing or underpowering, but you have a decent PSU. im assuming you un-install re-install? or try Windows Compat mode

...If you're playing it without a Steam account, then I guess it would have to be a cracked copy. Which may well be the reason it doesn't work.
If it's a legit copy, then you can log in to Steam. End of story.

I purchased a genuine DVD (used one). Sterm account is something required for the registration in creating an ID which is used in multi-plpayer game. I play single player game, so don't need a sterm account.

Well steam is used to update the game so that could be your issue. Get steam setup the game on steam and post back if you are still having issues.
Also make sure you remove all your overclocking if you are overclocking.

Every other Valve game, even the retail versions of purely single-player games, requires a Steam account. You cannot even install them, let alone play them, without one. I doubt L4D is any exception.

The game will not install without a Steam account. Either you purchased a cracked -> burned copy or you are trolling us.
Edit: also it is impossible to resell Valve games. They are tied permanently to a Steam account once activated.

@OP: Let's face it you've been saved lots of disappointment plus hours of staring starkly at the dumb, repetitive game play across all of 5 levels (or something) thinking "Is that it!?!?!?".

You cannot purchase games which require Steam (such as all of Valve's games) second hand, unless the person gives you the steam account with which it is registered.
The retail disc is useless once the game is installed and the key tied to a Steam account.
