Does WHS use compression when it makes a backups? What would happen if the main OS drive tanks? How hard would it be to recover the files on the assorted storage pool hard drives? I am assuming they will be spread out over all the drives and not in any particular order.
I have been on the fence between a WHS box and a Win 7 box just used for file storage and light internet/ word processing use. There are 4 other computers on the network. Only one generates data that needs backed up. The rest are either HTPC, folding and/or internet boxes that are just as easy to restore from the OS disk than from an image. Currently I just use Acronis true image and make an image of my main data drive for back ups (~400 gig compressed). However we have media (600 Gig of video) that would be nice to have available to all computers hence the WHS box or a win 7 box that would be on all the time. I just built the WHS box: E5300, GA-G41M-ES2L mobo, 2 gig ram, 2TB WD green, 1TB samsung, integrated video, antec 300 case (pulls about 55-60 watts at the outlet). I installed WHS but found myself wanting more. I started folding on it and then had to OC the processor, makes me think maybe I should have just installed Win 7 (I have an extra copy) so it can be used like a regular computer. What do the storage Gods think?
