I just took my PS3 to a friends house for the weekend, everything worked fine. I brought it back today and hooked it up. I'm trying to play a game but its not reading the discs properly. I've tried several different games and each time I try to load a game up it pauses, for a bit and gives me an error (80028F22) "An error occurred during the start operation." WTF is going on? Is my PS3 reader dead?

Try some other types of discs (Audio CD's, DVDs, etc) and see if they work. This happened to me about two years ago (40gb model) and I called Tech Support and they ending up sending me a coffin as it was still under warranty. Got my original system back pretty quick (I think it must have been 2-day shipping both ways).

I have the 20gb PS3 and the same thing happened to me. Just didn't read any of my dice anymore. Had to pay $150 to get it fixed. But diffidently try all kinds of other disc media and if you still get problems, then send it in. My turn around time was about a week and a half to two weeks.

alternatively if it turns out that your blu ray lens is faulty you can fix that yourself. Search for the thread on this board about buying broken PS3s and you can see how many people purchased PS3s with broken drives and fixed them themselves (me included).
That would be cheaper than paying Sony to fix it if you have to.

happened to me. DVD's and ps2 discs played, blu rays did not. I backed up and did the full system reformat and it started reading them again. Took a few hours worth of formatting, but it was worth a try, especially if you're not in warranty.

I have a friend who's PS3 wouldn't read any media out of the blue (release day console). Seeing as he couldn't afford the $150 at the time to get it fixed he just left it laying around for a good 3 or 4 months. Just recently he tried to play a game on it for shits and grins and it works again, lol. He figures it must have been a dirty lens or something.

Ok I actually just tried starting it up again with COD:WAW. It worked this time, wtf....but without the usual "playstation" starting animation that begins everytime you load any game. I ended up trying to quit the game and it froze again when I quit. I tried throwing a different game in and it continues to NOT load anything up. WTF. how does something go from working to not, to working, to not again.
So frusterating. A PC would never do this

You have a busted lens. Pretty common on the ps3. Send it in for repair. When did you get it? If you dont have a receipt just tell them that you got it as a gift, as long as your manufacture date is near the one year mark it should work to get it fixed for free.
FYI the date is on the back.
