As if companies have never done anything retarded before. There are significant changes between today's systems and those sold two years ago. It wouldn't be unthinkable for a company to no longer support older hardware with newer updates.

...it's a game system dude...I don't know what game systems you use, but they don't change hardware or software and not update a version of it...

As far as I know, this is the first generation of consoles to get user installable firmware updates. I don't have a PS3, or an Xbox360 so I don't know how it all works exactly. My experience with fixing PS2s that I've owned tells me that one hardware revision's laser won't necessarily work with an earlier revision's. That's all I have to go on, and why I asked.

they won't break or disable old functionality with new firmware. for example the new ps3 slims do not have the option to install linux, however after updating my ps3 40gb I still have the option there.

just logged in to play some zen pinball, and was blasted in the face with an " 3.0 UPDATE NOW YOU LOOSER!" message, i literally flew back 2 feet and my hair went white, i think a few things in the room caught fire, but i was too blown away to notice.

all in all, its ok.

Hey, can anybody else connect to the playstation network, its seems to have stopped workig for me after the update, the PSN test fails.

Could this be due to congestion on thier end, or possibly down.

edit: well i can get into the network on my jap account, so its probably on their end.

Its on the psn end, I had the same problem, took a few minutes of tries before it worked.

also for anyone who downloads 3.0, you can turn off the 'whats new' from displaying on bootup in the system menu. I hate how 3.0 dumps you into that shitty what's new section with the solid blue background. looks terrible...

I'm not impressed with this update. My opinions are swayed by Molson Canadian, be forewarned... and just to collaborate evidence, my PSN connection was down for about 15 minutes here too, from right after I finished the update at 12:30PM +5est until about 10 minutes ago. I just logged in. I wouldn't have cared but I just rocked a level in MM9 and was looking to see how my time stacked up... but I needed this update in order to see the stats, of course.

What's with the Playstation Store in every menu now? And a big WTF is it doing in my XMB's Video menu with me sitting here in Canada. I hate the new friends list. No idea what they were thinking there. Possiblly some drugs were smoked before that change was approved. If there were more functions included in the change, well ok, maybe I can understand. But this 'upgrade' seems to only focus on making your friends list uglier. Status indicator bar? Ok, why not just leave the top-right corner of XMB-home as it was and just fix the fucking clock issue. Why somehow mutate that simple fix into whatever the fuck you were thinking this would be: Why is there a 1ft open-ended rectangular growth surrounding 2 lines of text in my upper right corner now? It just looks so bad. I can't get over this.

Media streaming works great with Windows 7 though and the option to have 2 audio streams going out is very, very cool.

As long as games and Blu-rays still run, whatever... but I can't believe how many blatant 'WTF were they thinking' moments are there to greet you when you reboot and look around for the first time.

I always complained about how slow everything was to come up in the music/photo/video/trophy libraries on the ps3 hard drive, now its like lightning!!! Its like upgrading your pc without the hassle!

AS for 3.00 as a whole, it seems snappier, not sure about the greyed boxes on the friends list but the box in the top corner showing all the important info is a good addition. It has simultaneous HDMI & optical sound output at last too which is very good news....can finally switch the surround on for Fifa etc mid game instead of having to relaunch!! The only thing I was expecting was custom avatars but don't seem to be able to find that option...unless it was BS? Give me cross game chat now please (rumoured to be in 3.06?) and I'll be as happy as a pig in shit.

i prefer the bigger font and icons, makes it much easier to read, the sparkles obviously can be truned off or use a different theme. the greay boxes i agree with, i wonder if thats the same for all dynamic themes though

I never had any problem with the old font / icons... that's on a 40" 1080p screen.

I've used my PS3 on a 42" 720p set a 52" 1080p set and a 27" SD set.

On my SD television the XMB interface was barely usable, and that was mostly because I knew what all the icons looked like from my earlier HD experience.

Home update 1.3 has no specific release date. They just stated it would be released in September.

I just downloaded that Afrika theme, it's pretty cool because the Zebras actually are animated.

As for the overall look with 3.0. The sparkles look dumb, the new logo is very nice and I like the status bar along with the "Whats New" bubbles. The buddy list blocks look really out of place, both the blocks and the sparkles don't fit.

How about something more radical; what if the main interface was a [private] chat with all your friends? Login to PSN, there it is. That'd be cool. I start playing a game, the chat updates with a link that someone else can just click and follow me in.

My only real problems with this update are; the ticker can't be removed and the added Store icon under my Games tab. I don't need a 2nd Store icon. I'm fine with it under my PSN icon as before. Other than those fixes, I'm pretty happy with the update.

The big fonts bug me, the ticker in the top right bugs me and it should default to the area of the menu I was on when the system was shut off. /rant :( I really loved the minimalistic XMB before this, now it feels like they're tacking on bloat. Just feels like they took a nice slimmed down fancy keyboard and added big colorful keys that are geared towards fat fingers.

Pfft, it's no where near as bad as the Xbox 360 original dashboard and the terrible NXE.

Figured out it's the brightness I had to -5 before, I put it back, much better now.

EDIT: I guess I could comment on the update also lol...

The only "+" I noticed from the top right box with scrolling text is that in a game if I push de "PS" button to check the time I can now read the time. Before it I always had the controller's battery status on top and had to wait a bit.

I also like that without loading the store you can see some of the stuff, and that selecting it will bring you directly to that item. Sometimes (rarely) I need to browse longer than I would like through the store to find a new release.
