View Full Version : Has anyone seen a NEC LCD2490WUXi2 in the flesh (well plastic) yet?

Most of the IPS screens I've seen have a very distinctive grainy 'sparkle'. Apparently its the anti-glare coating that causes this effect, and surprisingly it rarely gets mentioned in reviews. It seems peoples tolerance of it varies with some people not noticing it and others unable to stand it. I'm very firmly in the latter camp.

I've seen the effect and winced on Apple 30", 20" and 23" cinema displays, and also on Hazro 30" monitors. These are all S-IPS based displays.

However the effect is a effectively invisible on the current Apple 24" iMac and the Apple 24" LED displays. They are H-IPS based, although there it may be hidden by the super glossiness.

How does the effect vary between S-IPS and H-IPS panels?

I'm looking to upgrade from a pair of Samsung 173P *VA screens which have an excellent colors and a superb "flat" look when reading text on a white background that's the closest I've seen to reading print. I'm very happy with the quality, but I'd now prefer a single screen.

I'd like to get a good quality 24" standard gamut monitor without a glossy screen, without a totally crazy price, which in a world of wide gamut monitors seems to be down to basically a choice of one, the NEC LCD2490WUXi2. However I've never actually seen one. Do they suffer from the IPS sparkle? If so I'll have a think about the Apple LED display.

Essentially I'd like a display that looks like the 24" iMac, but without the reflections and without the sparkle. Will the NEC do it for me?

I really want a monitor that is similar to reading print (or a book). Sounds like heaven for reading text.

Is it tied to specific panels, monitors, or do most non TN panels have this quality.

Sorry to add to your thread like this. (I don't know anything about NEC's other than them making quality monitors ).

I follow what you're saying - I was a CRT user (GDM-F520) until recently and the sparkles drove me nuts. I now have a 2490 and honestly never notice it anymore - I became accustomed fairly quickly. Ditto for the "screen door" effect of the larger dot pitch and inter-pixel black which wasn't present on my CRT.

I do recall it being mentioned in some of the reviews I read but unfortunately I don't have any references for you. On a sparkliness scale of 1-10, I believe the NECs score a 3-4, which may shock you.

While I don't have a WUXi2, the coating is considered a "feature" for NEC. The new ones are "probably" the same, assuming the texture doesn't change with the removal of the A-TW polarizer. Hopefully someone who actually has one will also follow up.

I just bought the NEC LCD2490WUXi2. The sparkle you mention does not seem to be around on my screen. although many reviewers say it is visible when you look really close. I have to mention that I don't have the US version. I have the EU version that doesn't come with the colori meter. I bought an Spyder 3 Pro colori meter for calibration.

All in all this screen works great for me. Samsung is letting me down with their screens because they are constantly out of stock. I payed 800 € for the NEC that priced 80 € higher than the Samsung. I just didn't want to wait 3 months for delivery.
