Ok I got a Western Digital external 80gb hard drive, well the other day water was spilled near it.:(:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
I can not get the drive to work in its current housing so removed the cover and removed it from the housing it was stored in., so I removed it and thought I could replug it back into a computer as a slave on computer.well it did not work as plan, it said could not find drive.:(:confused::eek:
I can hear what sounds like the drive is powered up and spinning.
what is needed to be able to hook it up to a computer to be able to get data off. I am needing it asap.

I hope you let the drive dry off sufficiently before you plugged it into a computer again...

yep 2 days, I dont think water got into the drive:):(:D:cool::p;),
I think the board or something screwed up.:( cause once plugged back up computer does not see the drive, the front round green light would light up, but no drive action, once plugged into usb port.
Tried other cables and another cords, all it does it light up, can hear drive spinning and feel it.

Your best chance of recovery at this point appears to be a PCB swap.

The drive is IDE, there will be connectors on the motherboard to support it. The jumper (little white plug) next to the power connector should be on the SLAVE setting if you wish to connect it as that.....otherwise the motherboard might not detect it.

Thats why I found this site to get the best info.
Ok thats what I thought, I had placed the pin on slave, and computer would not boot, got error screen, saying could not find drive 1 or drive 0.
I have a data cable that got to main hard drive in my dell, that is labeled master and slave.
I attached slave to this drive I am having trouble with and pin was in the slave position.
Rebooted computer and it will not boot, gives error message if this drive is attached.
Unplug drive and the computer will boot normally.
any ideas ?

PCB is that green board with chips on HDD. You probably shorted something on it, so if you somewhere find and replace that board the electronics it will maybe work. Your best bet is to visit some data recovery company. Yes, it won't be cheap, but if it is so important it is worth the money.

If all possible , I rather just install it in a computer, or if possible make something that would run it as an external again.
I contacted Western Digital- what a joke that was.
I feel the drive is ok, I think board took a hit, but theres got to be a way to make it run and transfer data somehow outside of western digital black plastic box. lol:eek:

toymaker, you said you connected it to the PC and it didn't work... That means electronics on HDD are fried. That is why you must go to HDD recovery company to get your data back.
Spilling water on your HDD is not covered by waranty, so WD have nothing to do with your drive, the only thing they can do is to reject your RMA because you broke the warranty rules.
