View Full Version : Really weird problem with my harddrive.

A week ago, I made a post about the delayed write failed messages I was receiving.

Well, I reinstalled Windows, and everything ram swimmingly for a week. Today, however, upon turning on my computer, I was greeted with a nasty surprise -- a blue screen of death.

I restarted my computer, and my brand new hard drive was not detected! I restarted my computer several times to no avail. Then I opened my computer and moved my SATA connector from the first jack to the second one, and then my computer booted up perfectly!

Does anyone know what is going on? I feel that it's only a matter of time before I get another BSOD and cannot start my computer, since my brother had the same problem.

My hard drive, PSU, RAM, and CPU are all fine, so I think my motherboard is the only remaining suspect. However, I am baffled by the fact that the problem goes away -- at least temporarily -- when I switch the SATA jack.
Any insight into my problem would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds to me like your hard drive is starting to die. The bad sector recovery routines can take up to 2 minutes to recover a bad sector. Your system may have a delayed write failure, or BSOD, but check out fine on reboot. Use a utility like HDTune to check your smart data and see if the reallocated sector count is much above zero.

I had suspected that my hard drive was causing the problems at first, but I have tried 3 different hard drives, and all of the diagnostic tools I have used indicate that my hard drives are fine..

Is it possible that motherboard is causing the problems, or are the problems I'm having strictly associated with hard drives?

Could be a bad trace on the board to the wonky SATA port, could be a defect in the southbridge. Stuff like this is rare, but not unheard of. One of the more common versions of such oddities is a motherboard with a bad RAM slot.
