is this the lowest it's been? This is the chip I want to upgrade my e5200 to, but hoping for sub $200.

i bought one last week this cpu is awesome ! newegg has EO stepping or atleast i got one and they overclock very easy .I got mine up to 3.4ghz no effort at all running 8.5x 400fsb 800mhz ddr2 1:1 ratio on 1.25v temps idle 33c to 54c under load
played GTA 4 last night first time onthe quad man that game really benefits from quad core
i think fps double just judging based on feel from my old e7200 @ 3.4ghz
anyways this is $10 cheaper than what i paid. this is a great cpu
iam using a Artic silver 7 pro cooler works very well and keeping it cool

I keep wondering if this would be a good upgrade from an E8400. Or if I should just wait and get an i7.

If you have the money to buy the necessary motherboard and DDR3 memory along with an i7 CPU, go ahead. If not, just getting a Q9550 makes more sense since you can keep all your current hardware.

of course people are going to say i7 due to it being the "best" as of now. any newer technology is going to be better.
If you want the quad go for it, great pricing. I decided not to get one due to me needing to by tools ;)
tools make me money ;)

The latest roadmap show Core i3 will work with P35/P45 MB's and will have both dual/quad core.

!?!? Link please. I would like to read.
edit...nevermind. found it. I thought it meant a new processor, but it's just changing the name of the stuff that's already out. ugh.

i upgraded from an oc e8500 to an oc q9550 and perceived no difference, also stuff like super pi, vantage and fraps readings during most games were pretty much equal. not worth it. upgrade your vid, or save for i7.

It depends on what you're using it for.. if you're not doing things that are making use of the extra cores then you won't see any benefits.. like if you're mostly a gamer.

i like to play games like GTA 4 Sup com that use multi-cores
i saw performance benefit from running a e7200 @ 3.4ghz to Q9550 @ 3.4ghz
iam not gonna upgrade my entire system when can i just get same or similar performance from a cpu upgrade
if you already have nice lga 775 system then just upgrade cpu
but the time software uses all the power of the Q9550 there will be better , faster , cheaper. Plus these chips oc great !
shipped Monday, arrived today - sSpec SLB8V which should be the E0 stepping for extra smiley goodness!

ZipZoomFly (or some other retailer) had them for $205 a couple weeks ago.
