So I got curious and went for a Ubuntu install.
Turns out they have a bug in their kernel that botches IPv6 somehow with certain network devices. I have a D-Link DWA-556 atheros based wireless nic. My connection couldn't hold up. The symptoms were as if I was loosing DNS info somehow after using large traffic.
I searched and found that IPv6 has issues, and googled how to turn it off. It required grub editing and installing a newer kernel. Overall, I got past it because I'm not scared of updating and text editors, but I don't think people will settle for having to do shit like that on day one of an OS install.
Than again, it's linux. But I hope my post helps others if they encounter the same problem. Happy Memorial Day Weekend!
