OK been working on an XP Laptop for someone. After I disabled several startup items that were not needed and disk clean up/defrag, etc., the system was running perfect, very snappy. At that point I felt comfortable enough with it to install SP3, even though I've had problems with it in the past slowing down boot times. Well it did it again.
Previously, Windows would load up to the user select screen, the user would be selected and it would drop you on the desktop within a second or two. This was even before disabling the additional startup items. Now, after SP3 is installed and the system was cleaned/defragged, the system boots to the user select screen as usual but when you choose the user, it loads the desktop up much slower than just with SP2. I've read elsewhere that the userinit.exe is taking longer to load, but I'm not sure.
The system is obviously speced out fine to operate XP SP2 just fine but what changes in SP3 would cause the desktop to load up so much slower?
