Just out of curiosity, i know back in the day, you had to have the same size drives and everything, i thought I heard now adays you can raid different size/spec drives in raid 0 now adays?
if that is the case, can you raid 2 OCZ vertex's and 1 Intel x25-m SSD's together into 1 raid 0 array?
Will there be a performance increase?
also, ive been reading about aligning a partition. Is there really any beneift of that? What exactly does that do and how is it beneficial by not taking that step?

Sure you can Raid them together. You will just have a drive that is 3X the size of the smallest one. 3X as fast as the slowest one (you will prolly cap your controller with those 3 drives.)
Adding the Intel to the 2 drive Vertex array will make it faster, but you will prolly not be able to tell the difference in daily use. 2 Vertexes are awfully fast by themselves.

I think I would just raid the vertexes and use them for games and apps, and use the Intel by itself for the OS.

well thats kinda my plan. Like I want to raid the 3 drives together, which should give me180GB. Then I was going to partition the drive to 1 60GB for the OS and 1 120GB for games and programs.
I figure in the scenerio above, both partitions will get max read and write.
like my 2 vertex's right now in bench32 show average 300mb write and 400mb read.
my Intel SSD shows 50 write and 250 read.
I know its not going to be 1:1 and I know its getting close to maxing out the motherboards stock controller, but if oyu combine all 3 you get
300+50 = 350
400+250 = 650
so
650 read and 350 write across the whole 180 GB.
does that make sense?

No, your writes will actually be 3X50 for 150 MB/sec if you add the Intel to the Vertex RAID. Do you have the new firmware installed on your Intel drive? Your write speed looks a little slow on the Intel. It should be closer to 80 MB/sec.
Your read speed would actually be 3 X 200 (speed of the Vertex Reads) for 600 MB/sec.

Nope, havent upgraded the firmware on the intel yet. Also im sure every page on it is in use too, so im sure after a firmware update, it would gain alot of extra speed.
I got my vertex's yesterday, 1 was up to date firmware wise, the other wasnt go figure.
I think I'm gonna sell the Intel then, and probably pick up 1 more OCZ vertex.
Im kind of surprised that RAID works that way. Logically, if you put data on 2 drives and you can pull from 2 drives at say 300MB. By adding a third, it doesnt make sense that you lose performance, as your pulling from all three at the same time. So the read and write speed on the 2 vertex's shouldnt change, because you add a third drive that is slightly slower in the write department.
Id figure oyu would be at the mercy of the controller, not the slowest drive :(
someone should re-write how raid works, to the logical thing above :)

The thing is that with 3 drives Raid 0 divides a chunk of data into 3 pieces, spread across the 3 drives. In order to read or write that data in a way that the computer can use, it has to wait for the slowest drive in order to get the whole chunk. So while the faster drives may actually finish their operation first, the slowest drive still needs to do it's thing before the computer can do anything with it.

Lets say you have a 1 GB file. that 1 GB file is split across 3 drives 333mb each.
the two vertex's would finish their task in about 1.2 seconds based on the 300mb write speed.
the Intel would take about 7 seconds for the same task. Definately much slower. so a total of 7 seconds for 1 GB.
however if you had that same 1 GB on just 2 drives 500mb each. and at 300mb write it would take about 1.5 seconds to complete the 1GB transfer.
so that makes perfect sense to me.
Thanks i just had to give it some thought. Maybe this breakdown will help others out on why.
I will pick up a 3rd vertex then after I sell the intel.
Thanks all for the assistance, and helping me understand this scenerio :)

Do you have the new firmware installed on your Intel drive?
Do you have a link for that?
I've been searching and getting nowhere. Did they remove that update from their site?

I don't own any Intel drives at the moment. But look for Ender's thread about that subject. He had links posted.

/edit/ Doh, too slow. How can I compete with the force?

I'm old enough to know, faster doesn't necessairly mean better.

For some reason, this must not have worked out well for Intel.
I haven't hear anything about the update being detrimental to the drives' health.
Maybe because the download was a bootable ISO and many people get confused with that type of thing?
It just looks like it's gone.

No, it's not. I just downloaded it to check. The link works??? Not sure what the problem is on your end. Can't seem to find it via downloadcenter's search tool, but it's there.

Then how about doing me a favor?
Download the ISO and upload it to Rapidshare or some other file sharing service and post the link?

I just downloaded it too from the original link that was posted. PM me with an email address and I will be happy to forward it to you.
I am leaving right now to do dinner at the In Laws. If you can't get the firmware by tonight, I will post it and provide a link.

Thank You to BOTH of you guys!
For some reason my NOD 32 was blocking all that stuff!
I really appreciate the assistance!
Here's a BEER for both you guys!

I'll take it.
I really appreciate your help.
Here's a token ( ) good for a refreshing drink at your local watering hole. They may or may not accept it.
Now if ya wanna collect the token from me, I'll guarantee it's good at the Kendal Tavern in Massillon, Ohio.
Thanks Gents. :D

Oh god, one of you people. ;)
My Mama was born in Chilicothe, but lead a difficult childhood. She bounced among relatives in Vinton County and the Columbus area until she met my Dad, who was stationed there in the Air Force. Since he was born in some no name town in British Columbia, that makes me half Canadian Redneck, and half Ohio Hillbilly.
My poor daughter. Her mama was half German and half VERY Polac. What a mess.

Well, I have spent most of my life living in the South Burbs of Chicago. But my Dad's family relocated to rural Indiana in the 50's, so I spend a lot of my free time on Lake Shafer, by Indiana Beach theme park.
You know them "You might be a Redneck" jokes? That's my family. :D
