I Have a dell Surplus workstation that I picked up from work,
and it's got a SATA raid controller on the MOBO.

I want to set up 2 1.5TB drives in a RAID 1 configuration, to back up data onto.

Now, Will these drives work if i move them later to another computer, or plug them into a dedicated raid card or to something like a www.dlink.com/DNS-323/, or will I need to copy the data to something else and rebuild the array?

Any help would be appreciated, before I go and buy the drives.

Cheers

You should count on having to copy the data if you move those drives to another system or use a different controller.

RAID 1 is not designed to be a back-up solution; if your system takes a surge that ruins one drive both will probably go down. You should have a daily back-up system in-place that you can use to restore your data.

As for your question, in my limited experience I have been able to move RAID 1 disks around to different systems, each volume was intact and ready to go. It's not like RAID 5 where it has a parity component or like RAID 0 where your data is split up.

You are not using it for a boot drive, right?

No, it is my backup/ miscelaneous storage for all my media and such.
I just want raid1 In case one of the disks fails ( ie a backup backup)

thanks
