Hi guys,

i am thinking of replacing the 2.5" hdd in my laptop with an SSD, unfortunatly, my laptop was one of the last models using the old 44 pin IDE connector (otherwise it is quite OK, dual core amd, 2gb ram and such). Now i obviously have little choice, i could only find some Transcend SSDs, but from what i read, they do have some stutters, and some models have simply retardedly slow write-speeds, and i cant find which controller is used in those transcend models

does anyone have any tips/info on those transcend drives? or perhaps a different suggestion?

The IDE SSDs on Newegg all look like crap. Either too small, too slow, or too pricey. But while I did not take the time to sort through the IDE laptop magnetic drives there, you will likely find the same situation. They are not making the latest and greatest drives in IDE format. Only in Sata format. :(

If you want a fast IDE SSD you'll have to get something like a mtron 3000.
I got a 1.8" ZIF IDE for my UMPC and it works great, no stutters since it's SLC,
I get average reads of about 80MB and average write of about 60MB or so.
It's too bad the Intel SSD only comes in the SATA interface.

well, i already decided for myself that 30gb would be enough storage space, my laptop currently has a 100gb drive in it, but that machine mainly runs linux, so big games and such (the x200 graphics dont help here either) are out of the question anyway

as for magnetic drives, the reason i want a ssd is because the current drive generates a bit too much heat for my tastes, and i would like a bit of a speed boost

but damn, looks like im stuck with magnetic storage then..

I have installed one for a friend in his laptop, and it ended up so awful he went back to the regular HD.

IDE SSDs just don't cut it.
