I just got a brand new Samsung Spinpoint 1TB HDD (HD103UJ) and was wondering what recommended app's are out there that scan and test for any type of errors, similar to MemTest (outside of XP's built-in "Error Check" option). I'm running Win XP x64 SP2 and this drive will serve as storage only. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Unless you are doing something mission critical with the drive, I wouldn't worry about it. If you really want, do a full format, which should also flag bad sectors, but stress testing of hard drives a la memtest is really not needed.

There is the long test in the OEM diagnostics. Get HD Tune and run the surface scan.

1. Full format
2. Tools from the manufacturer
3. You can use Hitachi Drive Fitness, WD Diagnostics, and Seagate's SeaTools as well
4. HD Tune Error Scan

The easiest is windows built in surface scan via chkdsk. Then manufacturer's smart/analysis tools. Spinrite 6 is really good for magnetic storage and probably the closest to what you're looking for, but it costs more money than I'd want to pay for a single machine.

Even if you do have an application that can check for infant mortality, hard drives are much more susceptible to fail at any moment due to its nature of being mechanical, as opposed to solid-state RAM.
