I just got a home theatre receiver and need a bit of help with the setup. I'm connecting the console to my TV using a regular HDMI cable - neither my TV nor receiver have optical in. My TV however DOES have digital coax and optical out, so I'm *assuming* the HDMI brings the surround signal as far as the TV. I'm running a cable from the TV digital coax 'out' to the digital coax 'in' on my receiver, but not getting any signal. Any ideas? Do-able with this setup? Thanks guys.

You TV would need to support pass through, which many do not. You might look at something like this so you can use the optical to your coax amp directly:

Not trying to flame or anything, but if you just bought a home theater receiver it should have an optical input? Unless it was a lower end HTIB?

It's pretty low-end for sure, but I live in Barbados and it has a video-capable USB connector with DIVX playback, 1080p upscaling and is multi-region, so you jump on whatever you can find down here! I've been using my XBox for DIVX playback until now, but trying to avoid (Another) RRoD as long as possible, so this should save some wear and tear. BTW, I got a new cable for the digital coax, and that seems to have done the trick, everything's working fine now.
Does your receiver have HDMI in and HDMI out?

if your receiver has HDMI, pass the XB360 HDMI out to the receiver, and then pass the receiver HDMI out to the TV.

It sounds like he has one of the HTIB-style receivers that is a DVD player and mini receiver all in one. Those usually have limited options when compared to full blown receivers, which is believe is why he was having the issues he was having.
i am certainly no expert when it comes to hooking up these things, but maybe if you can find a screen shot of the back of your unit, or if you post at least the model number and brand that people can very specifically help you hook it up.
right now it sounds like they're throwing out ideas then you have to go see if they work or not.

I agree, this is what the OP needs, in conjunction with the dongle for the 360 that allows you to use HDMI and optical at the same time.
The TV's optical/coax digital output usually only passes through surround sound from the tuner, not from the HDMI inputs. I would not rely on it, as you've already discovered.
